Study Summary

This trial will test whether 400 children with a history of obesity, family history of diabetes, or symptoms suggestive of diabetes have higher than normal levels of the disease. If so, a family-based educational program will be implemented to see if it can help reduce fasting plasma glucose levels.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for children aged 10-19 in an inner city clinic, particularly African American and Hispanic youths who are at higher risk of Type 2 diabetes. Eligible participants may be obese, have symptoms like excessive thirst or urination, show signs of insulin resistance such as skin changes, or have a family history of diabetes.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study aims to find out how common Type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance is among these kids compared to the general pediatric population. It will also test if a family-based educational program can help lower blood sugar levels in these children.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial focuses on screening and education rather than medication, there are no direct side effects from interventions being tested. However, the process may involve routine blood tests which could cause minor discomfort.
