Study Summary
This trial will test the effects of a physical activity intervention that uses a family dog in an established dog training protocol, focused on physical activity. The goal is to improve physical activity, quality of life and social wellbeing for children with and without developmental disabilities.
Who is the study for?
This trial is for children aged 8-17, with or without developmental disabilities, who have a family dog at home. It's designed to help them increase physical activity and improve their quality of life and social wellbeing through a special program involving their dog.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests a new 'Dog Assisted Intervention' (DAID) where kids train their family dogs as part of an exercise routine. The goal is to see if this makes the kids more active and improves their mental health and bond with the pet.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this intervention involves physical activity with dogs, potential risks may include typical exercise-related injuries or allergies related to dog interaction. Emotional distress could also occur if challenges arise in training or bonding with the dog.

Active Control
Group I: DAIDExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
Trained assistants will help participants train their dog to engage in imitation based dog training, using positive reinforcement training (operant conditioning) focused on physical activities.
Group II: Dog walkingActive Control1 Intervention
Trained assistants will help children train their dog to walk on a loose leash (eliminate pulling behavior) during this period using positive training techniques. The focus of this group will be on appropriate walking behavior to facilitate enjoyable independent dog-walking at home.
Group III: ControlActive Control1 Intervention
This group will all own family dogs but will not participate in either intervention during year 1. All participants assigned to the waitlist will be offered the DAID intervention the subsequent summer.
