OABM Trial Summary

This trial is investigating whether a new treatment can reduce problematic opioid use by changing people's cognitive biases away from opioids.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for male and female veterans aged 18-69 who are eligible for VA services, have been prescribed opioids for chronic pain (lasting over 90 days) and are at high risk of opioid-related issues due to a daily dose equivalent to or exceeding 20mg of morphine. Pregnant women or those trying to conceive, individuals in other treatment studies, with severe opioid withdrawal symptoms, unstable psychiatric disorders, certain brain conditions or MRI contraindications cannot participate.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests 'opioid approach bias modification' against sham training to see if it can alter the tendency towards prescription drug use by using ultra-high field MRI technology. The goal is to understand how the brain reacts during this process and potentially develop a new method to reduce harmful opioid use among veterans.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves behavioral therapy and MRI scans rather than medication, traditional side effects like you might expect from drugs aren't applicable here. However, participants may experience discomfort from staying still during an MRI scan.
