What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores how Medical Reiki, a form of energy healing, might aid emotional well-being and recovery for women undergoing breast cancer surgery. Participants will receive either Medical Reiki or a Sham Reiki session before their operation to determine any differences in mood and recovery. Women with Stage 0-III breast cancer, scheduled for a mastectomy soon, and residing near Bronx County, NY, are suitable candidates for this study. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to explore alternative healing methods that could enhance recovery and emotional well-being.

Do I need to stop my current medications for this trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that Medical Reiki is safe for breast cancer patients?

Research has shown that Medical Reiki is well-tolerated by breast cancer patients. In one study, 110 breast cancer patients who were about to undergo surgery experienced less anxiety and improved moods after receiving Reiki. Another study found that Reiki reduced pain, anxiety, and stress more effectively than sham Reiki or other relaxation methods.

No reports of harmful side effects from Reiki exist. It involves gentle touch or no touch at all, making it a safe option for many people. However, while Reiki can enhance well-being, it does not directly treat or cure cancer.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about Medical Reiki for breast cancer because it offers a unique, non-invasive approach that focuses on energy healing, which is different from the traditional surgical, chemotherapy, or radiation treatments. Unlike these standard of care options, Medical Reiki involves a gentle touch technique that aims to improve patients’ mood and potentially aid in their overall well-being before surgery. This alternative method could provide an additional layer of emotional support and relaxation, which might enhance recovery and reduce pre-operative anxiety.

What evidence suggests that Medical Reiki could be effective for breast cancer surgery recovery?

Research has shown that Medical Reiki, which participants in this trial may receive, can help reduce anxiety and improve mood in breast cancer patients. In one study, patients who received Reiki before surgery felt less anxious. Another study found that Reiki worked better than sham Reiki and other relaxation methods in reducing pain and stress. In this trial, some participants will receive Medical Reiki, while others will receive Sham Reiki. Additionally, Reiki has improved quality of life and reduced tiredness in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. These findings suggest that Reiki might support emotional well-being and recovery for women facing breast cancer surgery.13467

Published Research Related to This Trial

In a systematic review of 27 observational studies involving patients with HR+/HER2- advanced and metastatic breast cancer in Japan, key independent prognostic factors for overall survival were identified, including a short disease-free interval, the number of metastatic organs, and liver metastasis.
Liver metastasis was particularly significant, with a hazard ratio of ≥2.8 indicating a strong association with poor overall survival, while the disease-free interval and number of metastatic organs also showed moderate associations (hazard ratios of 1.3-2.8).

A study of 1,292 elderly women with stage I, estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer showed that after 2004, when new guidelines were introduced, there was a significant decrease in the use of radiation therapy (RT), particularly among women aged 80 and older, where RT use dropped from 80% to 41%.
Factors influencing the omission of RT included older age, higher comorbidity scores, smaller tumor sizes, and the absence of axillary surgery, indicating that patient and tumor characteristics, along with institutional practices, play a crucial role in the adoption of treatment guidelines.

Reiki therapy significantly reduced stress levels in caregivers of cancer patients, as indicated by lower Caregiver Strain Index (CSI) scores after 6 weeks of treatment compared to a sham group.
The study also found that Reiki was effective in lowering systolic and diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate, although it did not significantly affect salivary cortisol levels, suggesting that while Reiki may help with stress relief, its mechanism may not involve changes in cortisol.
