Medical Reiki for Breast Cancer
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores how Medical Reiki, a form of energy healing, might aid emotional well-being and recovery for women undergoing breast cancer surgery. Participants will receive either Medical Reiki or a Sham Reiki session before their operation to determine any differences in mood and recovery. Women with Stage 0-III breast cancer, scheduled for a mastectomy soon, and residing near Bronx County, NY, are suitable candidates for this study. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to explore alternative healing methods that could enhance recovery and emotional well-being.
Do I need to stop my current medications for this trial?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.
What prior data suggests that Medical Reiki is safe for breast cancer patients?
Research has shown that Medical Reiki is well-tolerated by breast cancer patients. In one study, 110 breast cancer patients who were about to undergo surgery experienced less anxiety and improved moods after receiving Reiki. Another study found that Reiki reduced pain, anxiety, and stress more effectively than sham Reiki or other relaxation methods.
No reports of harmful side effects from Reiki exist. It involves gentle touch or no touch at all, making it a safe option for many people. However, while Reiki can enhance well-being, it does not directly treat or cure cancer.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about Medical Reiki for breast cancer because it offers a unique, non-invasive approach that focuses on energy healing, which is different from the traditional surgical, chemotherapy, or radiation treatments. Unlike these standard of care options, Medical Reiki involves a gentle touch technique that aims to improve patients’ mood and potentially aid in their overall well-being before surgery. This alternative method could provide an additional layer of emotional support and relaxation, which might enhance recovery and reduce pre-operative anxiety.
What evidence suggests that Medical Reiki could be effective for breast cancer surgery recovery?
Research has shown that Medical Reiki, which participants in this trial may receive, can help reduce anxiety and improve mood in breast cancer patients. In one study, patients who received Reiki before surgery felt less anxious. Another study found that Reiki worked better than sham Reiki and other relaxation methods in reducing pain and stress. In this trial, some participants will receive Medical Reiki, while others will receive Sham Reiki. Additionally, Reiki has improved quality of life and reduced tiredness in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. These findings suggest that Reiki might support emotional well-being and recovery for women facing breast cancer surgery.13467
