TRAIN-Vets for Traumatic Brain Injury
(TRAIN-Vets Trial)
Trial Summary
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial will evaluate the impact of a multicomponent program (TBI Rehabilitation and Activation in Veterans; TRAIN-Vets) on improving cognitive function over an 8-month trial period in older Veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Older Veterans with a history of TBI and subjective cognitive complaints will be enrolled and randomly assign to either the TRAIN-Vets intervention (consisting of aquatic-based exercise training, cognitive training, and lifestyle coaching) or the Health Education Control, where they will receive educational materials about brain health and healthy lifestyles.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.
What data supports the effectiveness of the treatment TRAIN-Vets for Traumatic Brain Injury?
Research shows that dynamic cognitive remediation, which involves brain training exercises, significantly improves attention, working memory, processing speed, and reading fluency in individuals with traumatic brain injury. This suggests that similar approaches, like TRAIN-Vets, could be effective in enhancing cognitive functions in veterans with TBI.12345
How is the TRAIN-Vets treatment different from other treatments for traumatic brain injury?
The TRAIN-Vets treatment is unique because it is specifically designed for veterans with traumatic brain injury, taking into account the complex presentations and emotional toll associated with combat-related injuries, which are often different from civilian cases. This treatment is part of a broader program that integrates clinical care with research and education, focusing on the specific needs of military personnel and veterans.26789

Timeline
Screening
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial
Treatment
Participants in the TRAIN-Vets group engage in 6 months of thrice-weekly aquatic-based exercise training and 2 months of weekly structured online cognitive training, along with monthly virtual personalized risk reduction sessions. HEC group receives educational materials and monthly phone calls.
Follow-up
Participants are monitored for safety and effectiveness after treatment, with follow-up visits at approximately 6 and 8 months.
