Trial Summary

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. Since this is a non-drug therapy, it's likely you can continue your medications, but you should confirm with the trial organizers.

What data supports the effectiveness of the treatment Life Story Club for Loneliness and Apathy?

Research shows that life review therapy, which involves reflecting on personal life stories, can effectively reduce depressive symptoms in older adults. This suggests that similar storytelling-based treatments, like Life Story Club, might help with loneliness and apathy.12345

Is the Life Story Club intervention safe for humans?

The Life Story Club intervention, similar to life review therapy, has been studied in older adults and found to be feasible and acceptable, with no significant safety concerns reported in the studies reviewed.16789

How is the Life Story Club treatment different from other treatments for loneliness and apathy?

The Life Story Club treatment is unique because it uses storytelling and personal narratives to address loneliness and apathy, which is different from traditional treatments that might focus on medication or cognitive therapies. This approach allows participants to reflect on and share their life experiences, potentially improving mental health and social connections.28101112

What is the purpose of this trial?

Reminiscence therapy is a non-invasive, non-pharmacological intervention that has been shown to improve cognition, mood, functional status, quality of life, and apathy in older adults. Group reminiscence therapy combines structured social engagement and recounting of personal stories that address both social connection (a risk factor for cognitive decline) and cognition. Life story club© (LSC) is an established, non-profit organization that provides virtual, group reminiscence therapy for older adults to reduce loneliness and promote a sense of belonging and has not been formally studied.

Findings from Research

Home-based interventions significantly improve social connectedness and reduce loneliness and depressive symptoms among older adults, based on a meta-analysis of 14 randomized controlled trials.
Interventions lasting more than three months and delivered through mixed platforms (like online and in-person) were particularly effective, suggesting that the format and duration of these programs are important for their success.
