Trial Summary

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for this trial?

The trial protocol does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What data supports the effectiveness of the treatment Educational Nail Biopsy Video for reducing pre-operative anxiety?

Research shows that educational videos can help reduce anxiety before medical procedures. Studies on similar treatments, like videos for oral biopsies and other surgeries, have found that they improve understanding and lower stress levels.12345

Is it safe to use educational videos to reduce pre-operative anxiety?

Research shows that using educational videos before medical procedures is generally safe and can help reduce anxiety and improve patient understanding. These videos have been used in various procedures like skin, liver, and oral biopsies without any reported safety concerns.16789

How does the Educational Nail Biopsy Video treatment differ from other treatments for pre-operative anxiety?

The Educational Nail Biopsy Video treatment is unique because it uses an educational video to help reduce anxiety before surgery. Unlike other treatments that might involve medication or counseling, this approach provides patients with information about the procedure in a visual format, which has been shown to improve understanding and decrease anxiety.18101112

What is the purpose of this trial?

The investigators are interested in studying the effect of an animated video depicting a nail biopsy procedure on the anxiety, health literacy, and satisfaction of participants recommended to undergo a nail biopsy procedure. The investigators hypothesize that the animated video will reduce preoperative anxiety, increase health literacy, and increase patient satisfaction in relation to nail biopsy procedures.

Findings from Research

In a study of 120 patients undergoing oral biopsy, those who received information via video experienced significantly lower anxiety levels compared to those who received standard verbal information, as measured by the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI).
The audiovisual intervention was effective in reducing anxiety without affecting hemodynamic parameters, indicating that it is a safe and beneficial tool for improving patient experience during surgical procedures.
The Effect of an Informative Video upon Anxiety and Stress in Patients Requiring an Oral Biopsy: A Randomized Controlled Study.Toralla, O., Lopez Jornet, P., Pons-Fuster, E.[2022]
In a study of 246 patients undergoing transrectal prostate biopsy, those who received video-based education (Group 1) experienced a significant reduction in anxiety levels before the procedure compared to those who only received written instructions (Group 2).
Despite both groups reporting high anxiety levels initially, the video education led to a notable decrease in state anxiety scores after the information was provided, highlighting the effectiveness of video-based education in alleviating patient anxiety during stressful medical procedures.
The effect of video-based education on patient anxiety in men undergoing transrectal prostate biopsy.Tarhan, H., Cakmak, O., Unal, E., et al.[2020]
A study involving 200 patients showed that watching a patient-information video significantly reduced preoperative anxiety levels for those undergoing first-eye elective cataract surgery, with mean anxiety scores dropping from 45.5 mm in the control group to 11.2 mm in the intervention group (P < .001).
The video intervention also led to a notable decrease in worry about the procedure, as indicated by a Likert scale response where the control group had a mode score of 3 (worried) compared to a mode score of 1 (not worried) in the intervention group (P < .001).
