What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether an animated video can reduce anxiety and improve understanding for individuals undergoing a nail biopsy. Researchers aim to determine if watching the video before the procedure reduces anxiety and increases satisfaction. Participants will receive either the usual verbal information or the same information plus the educational nail biopsy video. This trial is open to anyone recommended for a nail biopsy at the specialty nail clinic. As an unphased trial, it offers a unique opportunity to contribute to enhancing patient experiences during medical procedures.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for this trial?

The trial protocol does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that this educational video is safe for reducing pre-operative anxiety?

Research has shown that educational videos can safely and effectively reduce anxiety before medical procedures. These videos help individuals understand what to expect, making them feel calmer and more informed.

This trial focuses on an educational video about nail biopsies. Watching a video is safe because it is non-invasive, meaning it doesn't involve entering the body. Studies suggest that these videos can improve patient knowledge and satisfaction without causing harm.

Overall, the educational video is a well-tolerated method to ease anxiety before a procedure.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about using an educational video to address pre-operative anxiety because it offers a new way to prepare patients for nail biopsy procedures. Unlike the standard approach, which relies on verbal instructions and handouts, this video provides a visual and auditory learning experience that can be more engaging and easier to understand. By delivering clear, step-by-step information, the video aims to reduce anxiety by helping patients feel more informed and confident about the procedure. This innovative method could lead to improved patient experiences and outcomes, making it a promising addition to pre-operative care.

What evidence suggests that the Educational Nail Biopsy Video is effective for reducing pre-operative anxiety?

Research has shown that educational videos can reduce anxiety before surgery and improve understanding of medical procedures. Studies have found that videos about medical procedures, such as anesthesia, help patients feel less worried and more informed. In this trial, participants in the Educational Video Group will watch a video about the nail biopsy procedure in addition to receiving standard care. Although specific data on the nail biopsy video is limited, it is expected to offer similar benefits. The video aims to help people feel calmer, better informed, and more satisfied with their care. Watching a video may also be more engaging than just reading or listening about the procedure.12345

A quality improvement project involving 60 bariatric surgery patients showed that those who viewed an informational video tour of the perioperative division experienced a significant reduction in preoperative anxiety, with improvements in 9 out of 10 anxiety items measured.
In contrast, patients who only received traditional verbal and written instructions had a reduction in anxiety for only 5 out of 10 items, highlighting the effectiveness of audiovisual education in enhancing patient comfort before surgery.

In a study of 67 patients scheduled for liver biopsy, providing additional information through a video did not significantly reduce anxiety levels compared to standard verbal and written information.
Both groups of patients demonstrated excellent understanding and satisfaction with the information received, indicating that the standard methods of information delivery were effective.

In a study involving 100 patients, those who watched an 8-minute educational anaesthesia video experienced significantly lower anxiety levels before and after surgery compared to those who received a standard verbal briefing.
Patients who viewed the video also reported higher overall satisfaction with their medical care, indicating that educational interventions can enhance both emotional well-being and patient experience in the perioperative setting.
