Study Summary

This trial will study whether providing incentives to reduce alcohol consumption, in addition to cognitive behavioral therapy, will help veterans with alcohol abuse disorder.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for veterans enrolled at the DVAHCS who have been diagnosed with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) within the past month and are willing to try quitting or reducing their alcohol intake. It's not open to those who've had less than three days of sobriety, are already in AUD treatment, or have severe withdrawal symptoms.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests if adding Mobile Contingency Management (mCM), which uses a smartphone app for monitoring abstinence, improves outcomes when combined with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for treating AUD. Participants will also be randomly assigned to receive or not receive a monetary incentive after six months based on their drinking levels.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves behavioral therapies and potential monetary incentives rather than medications, traditional side effects like you'd see with drugs aren't expected. However, participants may experience stress or anxiety related to adherence to therapy protocols.
