IAMSBIRT Trial Summary
This trial is testing whether a specific strategy for implementing SBIRT (a brief intervention for alcohol and drug use) in pediatric trauma centers is effective. The strategy is based on three core elements: didactic training + performance feedback + leadership coaching. It also includes two enhancements: integration of the intervention into the electronic medical record, and development of separate training tracks for nurses, social workers and organizational leaders.
Who is the study for?
This trial is for English-speaking adolescents aged 12-17 who have been admitted to a participating trauma service due to injury and screened positive for alcohol or other drug (AOD) use. They must be able to give written assent, with parents providing consent. Excluded are those in custody, admitted after suicide attempts, or unable to consent due to acute mental conditions.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests an implementation strategy called SSL which includes training, feedback, and leadership coaching aimed at improving the delivery of SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) for AOD use in pediatric trauma centers. It's enhanced by EMR integration and tailored training tracks.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial focuses on implementing a screening and intervention strategy rather than a medical treatment or drug therapy, it does not directly involve side effects typically associated with clinical trials of pharmaceuticals.

Study Objectives
Outcome measures can provide a clearer picture of what you can expect from a treatment.Primary outcome measures
Proportion of admitted injured adolescents receiving each element of the alcohol screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) protocol
Secondary outcome measures
Percent of adolescents with screened positive for AOD use and who reported linkage to discussions about AOD with a health care provider within 30 days of discharge within 30 days of discharge
Rate of readiness for organizational change within each institution
