OTLTC Trial Summary

This trial will compare two groups of long-term care residents who need the same level of help from staff. One group will receive occupational therapy services provided by students over eight weeks, after which the level of help each group requires will be compared.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for long-term care residents at St. Joseph's Villa who can consent (or have a proxy to consent) and need help with daily activities due to physical or cognitive limitations. They must score low on specific scales measuring their ability to perform daily tasks and cognitive function, indicating they are not too dependent or cognitively impaired.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests if occupational therapy services provided by OT students over eight weeks can reduce the level of assistance required by aging residents in long-term care when compared to those who do not receive these additional services.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves non-invasive occupational therapy interventions rather than medications, traditional side effects are not expected. However, there may be risks associated with increased activity levels for some participants.

Both groups will receive the standard care provided at the long-term care home. The intervention group will receive the addition of directed occupational therapy intervention provided by student occupational therapists for up to 30 minutes, five days a week. At present, no decisive evidence exists that this intervention being tested will be superior to the standard of care.
