Calf Muscle Strengthening for Aging
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to explore how calf muscle strengthening exercises can reduce damage and inflammation in the muscles of older adults. By focusing on the impact of fat within the muscle, researchers hope to understand how progressive resistance exercise (PRE) can improve muscle health with age. Ideal participants can commit to a 12-week, thrice-weekly virtual exercise program and handle wearing a weighted vest. As an unphased trial, this study offers participants the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research on muscle health in aging.
What prior data suggests that this calf muscle strengthening protocol is safe for older adults?
Research has shown that calf muscle strengthening exercises are generally safe for older adults. Studies have found that these exercises can boost muscle strength and balance without major risks. For example, one study discovered that doing calf-raise exercises at home improved nerve and muscle coordination in older men, which can help prevent mobility issues.
Another study suggested that heavy strength training, including calf muscle exercises, might even reduce heart-related risks in older adults. These exercises are designed to be safe and effective, focusing on building muscle strength.
Overall, evidence supports that calf muscle strengthening is well-tolerated and carries a low risk of side effects for older adults.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about calf muscle strengthening exercises for aging because they offer a non-invasive, easily accessible method to improve muscle health in older adults. Unlike traditional treatments that might include medication or physical therapy in clinical settings, this approach leverages virtual group sessions over Zoom, making it convenient and potentially more engaging for participants. This method focuses directly on enhancing muscle strength and reducing fat within the muscle through consistent, guided exercises, which could lead to improved mobility and quality of life for the elderly.
What evidence suggests that calf muscle strengthening might be an effective treatment for aging?
Research has shown that strengthening the calf muscles greatly benefits older adults. This trial will focus on a calf muscle strengthening program, where participants will complete a 3x/week, 12-week exercise regimen over Zoom. One study found that performing calf-raise exercises at home improved the coordination between nerves and muscles, helping to prevent mobility issues. Another study demonstrated that these exercises enhanced walking and improved muscle health. Stronger calf muscles also correlate with better balance, which can help prevent falls. Overall, regular calf exercises can help older adults become stronger and improve their physical abilities.16789

Screening
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial
Treatment
Participants undergo a 12-week progressive resistance exercise (PRE) program targeting the ankle plantarflexor, delivered via Zoom
Follow-up
Participants are monitored for changes in muscle strength, composition, and biopsy results post-intervention
What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

Treatment groups
Experimental Treatment
Older adults will complete a 3x/wk, 12 week calf strengthening exercise over zoom. The intervention will be delivered in small groups. Older adult baseline data will be compared to post-intervention data to understand the impact of exercise on aging muscle and fat within the muscle
