Study Summary
This trial is important as it will provide data on whether earlier referral to palliative care can improve patient outcomes.
Who is the study for?
This trial is for adults over 18 with advanced stage IV cancer, or certain stage III cancers with a poor prognosis. Participants must have an ECOG performance status of ≤2, indicating they can care for themselves but may not be able to carry out work activities, and a life expectancy of more than 6 months.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The STEP system is being tested to see if it helps identify patients with severe symptoms early on so they can receive palliative care sooner. This single-arm trial will help plan for a larger study comparing STEP to usual care.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this intervention involves symptom screening and referral to palliative care rather than direct medical treatment, specific side effects are not applicable as in drug trials.

Group I: Symptom screening with Targeted Early Palliative care (STEP)Experimental Treatment1 Intervention
The experimental arm receives routine symptom screening at every outpatient visit; if symptoms are above a certain threshold, then a triggered email is sent to a triage nurse, who calls the patient to offer early referral to and follow-up by a symptom control and palliative care team.
