Study Summary

This trial will test the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of the Tele-Exergame mobility program in COVID-19 or PUI (persons under investigation), during hospitalization and examine post-hospitalization outcomes.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for hospitalized COVID-19 patients or those under investigation who can walk with or without help and expect to stay in the hospital for at least 3 days. It includes veterans and others, regardless of common illnesses like pneumonia. People with severe vision/hearing issues, cognitive impairments, terminal illness, ICU patients, non-English/Spanish speakers, and those unable to follow the program are excluded.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests a tele-exergame mobility program using tablets that allow patients to exercise through game-based activities while being remotely supervised. The goal is to see if this method is feasible and effective during hospitalization and after discharge compared to standard care.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this intervention involves physical activity through exergames, potential side effects may include typical exercise-related risks such as muscle soreness or strain. However, it's designed considering patient safety; thus serious side effects are not anticipated.

COVID-19 patients or PUI (persons under investigation) or other inpatients admitted to the MEDVAMC (n=60), with an anticipated length of stay of at least 3 days will be recruited. Participants will be randomized (n=1:1) to either intervention (IG) or control (CG) groups. Both groups will receive standard of care. IG will additionally receive Tele-Exergame MP therapy. Tele-Exergame sessions will range from 3-10 minutes based on patient ability and completed twice daily. They will complete assessments at baseline and at one-month post-hospital discharge.
