Study Summary

This trial will test whether or not CPAP can be an effective controller therapy for asthma in people with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or higher. The trial will have two phases, with the first phase determining the optimal duration of CPAP, and the second phase testing CPAP against a sham device in a controlled setting.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for adults aged 18-65 with asthma and a BMI of 30 or higher. Participants must have a physician's diagnosis of asthma, specific lung responsiveness to methacholine (PC20 < 16 mg/ml), and relatively low allergy antibody levels (IgE < 100 IU/ml). Healthy individuals without asthma but with similar BMI can also participate as controls.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study is testing if CPAP, which increases lung volume by providing positive expiratory pressure, can help control asthma in overweight patients. It has two parts: first finding the best duration for CPAP use, then comparing real CPAP against sham (fake) treatment in a blinded experiment where neither participants nor researchers know who gets which until after the results are collected.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
While not specified here, common side effects of using CPAP may include discomfort or irritation at the mask site, dry nose or throat, headaches, bloating and difficulty falling asleep initially.
