Study Summary

This trial will study the effect of nicotine messaging and nicotine content of cigarettes on people's beliefs about nicotine and their subsequent use of tobacco and nicotine products.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for adult smokers who aren't trying to quit within the next 6 weeks, can consent, speak English fluently, and plan to stay local. They must smoke at least 5 non-menthol cigarettes daily for a year. Pregnant women or those planning pregnancy, people with serious health issues, heavy drinkers, users of other nicotine products (with some exceptions), and individuals with certain psychiatric conditions are excluded.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study investigates how messages about nicotine and the nicotine content in cigarettes influence beliefs and tobacco use behavior. Participants will receive different types of messaging while their cigarette consumption patterns are observed over approximately six weeks.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves smoking regular cigarettes under varying informational conditions rather than testing new drugs or treatments, typical side effects associated with smoking such as coughing or increased risk of respiratory problems may be expected.

4Treatment groups
Experimental Treatment
Group I: Reduced Nicotine Content (RNC) cigarettesExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
After completing a 7-day baseline period of smoking own brand cigarettes, participants will be randomized to a 28-day experimental period and will receive reduced nicotine content cigarettes.
Group II: Normal Nicotine Content (NNC) cigarettesExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
After completing a 7-day baseline period of smoking own brand cigarettes, participants will be randomized to a 28-day experimental period and will receive normal nicotine content cigarettes.
Group III: Nicotine Corrective MessagingExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
After completing a 7-day baseline period, participants will be randomized to a 28-day experimental period and will view nicotine corrective messaging at each in-person session.
Group IV: Delayed Control MessagingExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
After completing a 7-day baseline period, participants will be randomized to a 28-day experimental period and will not view nicotine messaging until the final study session (Delayed Control Messaging).
