HAFTRAP Trial Summary

This trial is a study of whether or not a HEPA filter can reduce exposure to pollutants for people who live near highways.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for people living within 200 meters of interstate I-93 in Somerville who are home full-time and can answer questionnaires in English/Spanish. It's not for those on blood pressure or anti-inflammatory meds, with high exposure to traffic pollution elsewhere, using lots of candles/incense, having forced-air systems at home, smokers or living with smokers, or with a major heart history.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests if HEPA air filters in homes near highways can improve heart health compared to sham (fake) filters. Participants will try both real and fake filters for 30 days each, separated by a washout period. Health effects like inflammation and blood pressure are measured to see if the filters make a difference.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves using air filtration systems at home rather than taking medication, there aren't typical drug side effects involved. However, participants might experience placebo effects during the sham filtration phase.
