Study Summary

This trial aims to find better ways to teach people with Parkinson's how to cough and swallow, reducing the risk of pneumonia and other health issues.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for people over 40 with Parkinson's Disease who have trouble swallowing, a cough disorder, and no other major neurological disorders, head and neck cancer, respiratory diseases, recent smoking history, uncontrolled high blood pressure or allergy to capsaicin. They must not be undergoing other treatments for cough or swallowing issues.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests if varying the practice conditions of cough skill training can improve the ability to cough effectively in those with Parkinson's. It aims to find better ways to protect the airway by enhancing cough effectiveness through different training methods.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves skill training rather than medication, side effects may include discomfort during exercises or potential fatigue from participation in the training sessions.

Study Objectives

Outcome measures can provide a clearer picture of what you can expect from a treatment.
Primary outcome measures
Change in Peak Expiratory Flow Rate
Secondary outcome measures
Change in Respiratory Kinematics, specifically lung volume excursion

Experimental Treatment
Group I: Cough Skill TrainingExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
During cough skill training, participants will be seated in front of a computer with real-time visualization of their cough waveform. A target line will be provided, and participants will be instructed to perform a single voluntary cough so that their peak flow is within the target's range. Participants will be instructed to continue the cough training regardless of initial accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

Are individuals of an advanced age being included in this research?

"This clinical trial is recruiting participants aged 40 to 90. Additionally, there are 33 studies for minors and 539 for seniors."

Answered by AI

Could Cough Skill Training be detrimental to people's health?

"Our team at Power evaluates Cough Skill Training to be a 1 based on the Phase 1 trial status; meaning, there is only limited data supporting its safety and efficacy."

Answered by AI

Is the eligibility for this study still available?

"Affirmative. The clinical trial is recruiting participants and the data available on clinicaltrials.gov confirms this; it was published on September 21st 2022 and recently updated on January 17th 2023. 26 individuals are needed to be recruited from 1 designated site."

Answered by AI

Could you please provide me with the aggregate figure of participants in this experiment?

"Yes, the records housed on clinicaltrials.gov reveal that this experiment is actively seeking volunteers. It was first posted on September 21st 2022 and last edited on January 17th 2023 with 26 participants wanted at 1 site."

Answered by AI

What type of individual would be ideal to take part in this medical experiment?

"This clinical trial is actively seeking 26 participants afflicted with Parkinson's disease, who are between the ages of 40 and 90. In addition to this age requirement, prospective patients must have evidence-based dysphagia (penetration-aspiration score >2 on flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing), demonstrate a weakened cough reflex (maximal voluntary cough peak flow <5 L/s), not suffer from any other neurological disorders or head and neck cancer, possess no respiratory issues such as smoking within 5 years nor uncontrolled hypertension, and be free of allergies to capsaicin (reflex cough stimulus)."
