TSFII Trial Summary

This trialwill assess how well Talk STEM Familia, an education program, helps students and parents learn science words, use them in context, and feel more confident in their academic skills.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for Latinx English learner parents with a child in grades 4-8. Participants must primarily speak Spanish at home, have internet access, and own a smartphone, tablet, or computer.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests the Talk STEM Familia program's impact on students' and parents' knowledge and use of scientific academic vocabulary. It also looks at learning behaviors, self-confidence in academics, and satisfaction with the technology used.See study design

Group I: Experimental: InterventionExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
Parent/student/dyads in the treatment condition will be sent program materials via mail and text or email, including smart-speaker hardware, wireless network bridges for wireless network connectivity, and web links to Talk STEM Familia, including set-up video tutorials, and graphic instructions. Intervention activities will take place in participants' homes over the 24-week intervention period and will include using the dual-language Talk STEM Familia technology to receive instruction, practice, and feedback on academic vocabulary.
Group II: Treatment as usualActive Control1 Intervention
Parent/student dyads in this arm will receive treatment-as-usual (the vocabulary instruction regularly provided in their schools). They will receive the TSF technology after post-test data has been collected.

What goals is this medical study striving to accomplish?

"The primary evaluation criteria for this research is the Student SAV Word Usage (ASWU), which will be gauged at Baseline, 12 weeks into treatment and 24 weeks after. Secondary metrics include assessing User Satisfaction and Technology Usability Ratings through 25 Likert-scale items derived from the System Usability Scale (SUS) as well as attitudinal and behavioural intention components of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM).
