What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine if writing about emotions can improve mental health for people with a spinal cord injury (SCI). Participants will either join a 10-week online writing program called Expressive Emotional Writing or continue their usual activities. The study seeks adults with SCI who experience limb weakness and have internet access. As an unphased trial, it offers a unique opportunity to explore new methods to enhance mental well-being.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that Expressive Emotional Writing is safe for adults with spinal cord injury?

Studies have shown that expressive emotional writing is generally safe for adults with spinal cord injury (SCI). Research indicates that participants in a 10-week online program experienced emotional improvement without serious side effects. Guided by a coach, this writing method has reduced feelings of grief and improved sleep issues. It also enhances coping skills and overall mental health. The studies reported no negative effects, suggesting that this approach is well-tolerated.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the expressive emotional writing approach for spinal cord injury because it introduces a non-invasive, psychological method that complements traditional physical and medical treatments. Unlike standard care options like medications and physical therapy, expressive writing provides a unique outlet for emotional processing, which may help improve mental well-being and quality of life. This method leverages the power of storytelling and self-expression, offering a potentially impactful way to address the emotional challenges faced by individuals with spinal cord injuries.

What evidence suggests that expressive emotional writing might be an effective treatment for spinal cord injury?

Research shows that writing about emotions can improve mental health for people with spinal cord injuries (SCI). In this trial, participants in the expressive writing arm will engage in a 10-week program designed to help them express feelings and handle challenges better, potentially enhancing well-being. Previous studies have shown that this method can reduce grief and improve sleep. Additionally, writing about emotions has been linked to better body image, less stress, and reduced depression. These findings suggest that expressive writing could be a helpful tool for improving mental health in people with SCI.12367

Expressive writing (EW) interventions showed a small but significant effect in relieving cancer symptoms among 1,718 patients, based on a meta-analysis of 14 trials.
While EW did not significantly improve psychological and cognitive outcomes, it did enhance health-related quality of life compared to usual care, suggesting potential benefits that may require further investigation.

Therapeutic songwriting can help individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) improve their identity and subjective well-being, as shown in a six-week intervention with eight participants in a rehabilitation facility.
Participants with less severe injuries tended to have more positive identity trajectories, suggesting that songwriting may be particularly beneficial for those with milder injuries, highlighting the need for further research in this area.

The Turkish version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) is a reliable tool for screening anxiety and depression in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), with high reliability scores (Cronbach's alpha of 0.90 for anxiety and 0.77 for depression).
In a study of 175 individuals with traumatic SCI, 40% experienced anxiety and 28% experienced depression, highlighting the need for rehabilitation teams to assess emotional well-being and provide appropriate interventions.
