Glucagon Trial Summary

This trial is investigating the effect of hyperglucagonemia (high levels of the hormone glucagon) on insulin action, specifically in adipose tissue. The study will enroll normal glucose tolerant subjects who will receive a continuous glucagon infusion for 12 hours. Following the infusion, subjects will receive tracer infusions and undergo various tests for adipocyte metabolism. The study will be repeated with a control group of subjects who will receive normal saline. The results of the study will help to understand the pathophysiology of metabolic disturbances in type 2 diabetes patients.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for healthy adults aged 18-50 with normal blood sugar levels and a BMI of 23-28. They must not be on medications affecting glucose tolerance, allergic to glucagon, pregnant, or heavily into exercise. Stable weight in the last three months is required.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests how high glucagon levels affect fat cell metabolism and insulin action by comparing the effects of a 12-hour glucagon infusion followed by metabolic measurements against saline (a placebo) in normal glucose-tolerant subjects.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Potential side effects may include reactions at the infusion site due to glucagon or saline administration, discomfort from tracer infusions used to measure metabolism, and possible pain or complications from abdominal adipose tissue biopsy.

Frequently Asked Questions

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

Has there been prior experimentation with Glucagon Infusion?

"At present, 11 clinical trials are investigating Glucagon Infusion with one of these in Phase 3. While many studies are based in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, 24 facilities across the world have launched their own investigations into this subject matter."

Answered by AI

Are there any current opportunities for volunteers to join this clinical trial?

"Clinicaltrials.gov states that this clinical trial is currently recruiting volunteers; the original posting was made on February 5th 2018, and it has been amended most recently on September 8th 2022."

Answered by AI

Under which criteria are eligible participants accepted into this clinical trial?

"For this study, 12 individuals with insulin sensitivity between 18 and 50 years old, BMI levels ranging from 23-28 kg/m2, male or female gender, and weights that have been stable for the prior three months are being enrolled."

Answered by AI

How many individuals are enrolled in this clinical experiment?

"Correct. Clinicaltrials.gov indicates that this medical trial, which was originally posted on February 5th 2018 is actively enrolling patients into the study. Just 12 individuals are needed from 2 different locations to complete their research goals."

Answered by AI

To what conditions is Glucagon Infusion typically applied?

"Glucagon Infusion is frequently used to treat dermabrasion, as well as diabetes, oral cavity complications and suspected glaucoma."

Answered by AI

Is enrollment open to those over the age of 65 for this clinical trial?

"Qualified individuals for this clinical trial must be aged between 18 and 50 years old. There are a total of 29 trials currently recruiting patients that are under the age of 18, while 97 studies seek people over 65."
