ROADSkills Trial Summary

This trial uses GPS and video data to track and improve driving safety for seniors. Through personalized feedback, we hope to reduce their risk of collisions and injuries. We need older drivers to help us design a larger study.

Who is the study for?
The ROADSkills program is for drivers aged 65-79 who own and can drive an insured vehicle, hold a valid license, speak English fluently, have had an eye check in the last two years with up-to-date prescriptions if needed. Those with serious illnesses or poor cognitive screening results are excluded.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
This study tests whether older drivers improve their driving skills after receiving personalized video feedback based on GPS tracking of real-world driving patterns. It aims to assess the effectiveness of this behavioral intervention before planning a larger national trial.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves non-invasive monitoring and feedback without medical interventions, there are no direct physical side effects expected from participating in the ROADSkills program.

Experimental Treatment
Active Control
Group I: Intervention groupExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
Participants in the intervention group will watch their respective training video individually approximately four to six weeks after their baseline visit. Each training video will be 20-25 minutes in length where they will receive voice-over feedback on their driving from a member of the study team alongside video clips taken from the device of their behind-the-wheel performance. They will also receive a written summary of their feedback to keep at the end of their feedback session.
Group II: Control groupActive Control1 Intervention
Four to six weeks after their first baseline visit, control group participants individually will watch a 30-minute (generic) video that describes the benefits and challenges of aging-in-place that discusses the importance of community mobility in later life. At the end of their session, participants will be given a government brochure on this topic.
