Nearly 60% of pediatric patients diagnosed with cancer develop malnutrition caused by a combination of disease burden, side effects of chemotherapy, and the intensity of cancer treatment. These patients are known to have an increased risk of infection, treatment-related toxicity, inferior clinical outcomes, and increased risk of mortality. Malnutrition may progress to cancer cachexia, characterized by anorexia, increased inflammation, decreased fat, and decreased muscle mass with subsequent weight loss, which is associated with decreased overall survival. The goal of the proposed research is to determine changes in body composition, weight status, and nutritional status between common nutrition interventions including oral nutrition supplements (ONS), appetite stimulants, and enteral nutrition (EN) among pediatric cancer patients. A secondary goal of this research is to utilize the findings to develop clinical nutrition guidelines for this patient population. The specific objective of the research proposed is to solve the lack of evidence to adequately treat nutritional deficits in the pediatric oncology population. Without this data, there is a lack of clinical consistency in the initiation and selection of appropriate nutrition interventions to provide a more definitive pathway of care. This study can help formulate a clinical guideline for this patient population before, during, and after treatment.

This is a single site, single-blinded parallel randomized control trial that investigates a multi-level intervention to improve postpartum blood pressure in women with hypertensive disorder pregnancy. The investigators will recruit women diagnosed with a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, identified between 3rd trimester and 2 weeks post-delivery. The investigators will randomize participants to receive usual care home blood pressure monitoring for 6 weeks versus an intervention of usual care + blood pressure and weight monitoring + a doula trained in heart health. This trial will be conducted in partnership with a local community-based organization, Healthy Start Inc.

Food insecurity and low diet quality are persistent problems linked with chronic disease and poor health among limited-resource children and adults using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). We have shown nutrition education via adult-focused, direct SNAP-Education (SNAP-Ed) improved household food security by 25% but not adult dietary quality among SNAP-eligible households using a randomized, controlled, longitudinal SNAP-Ed intervention in Indiana. Households experiencing food insecurity often reserve food considered "healthful" for children, so child dietary quality improvement may precede that observed among adults when household food security improves. This study will determine the effect of adult-focused direct SNAP-Ed on child dietary quality and household food security using a longitudinal randomized, controlled SNAP-Ed intervention. Assessment will include repeated 24-hour dietary recalls to determine usual intake, the U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module, and behavior data from before and after the 10-week "intervention period," and 1 year later, after which the control group will receive the intervention. Low-income participants (n=275) from Indiana will be recruited following SNAP-Ed protocol. Results of the study will inform the creation of supplementary on-demand SNAP-Ed educational material focused on improving healthful dietary intake for children and adults in situations of food insecurity in households with children. Education on modeling healthy attitudes and behaviors, planning and preparing family meals, and dietary shortfalls as informed by the results and previous evidence will be included and evaluated. The study aligns with the goals of USDA to increase food security and this RFP to improve healthful behaviors, food quality and nutrition.

The goal of this clinical trial is to improve the health of workers at their worksite by providing subsidized healthy meals supported by nutrition education and behavioral nudges using mobile health and Bluetooth technology. The aim of this study is to: Randomize 240 individuals in 8-10 worksites to either Good Bowls alone or Good Bowls + Phone App nudges. Using a crossover design, the primary outcome is the score on a validated Mediterranean diet screener, with secondary outcomes including weight, blood pressure, carotenoid levels, and food security. Participants: Workers at blue and white-collar worksites. Procedures: Workers will be recruited from 8-10 worksites who will be initially randomized within each site to Good Bowls alone or Good Bowls + Phone App nudges. Initial assignment will be followed for four months, after which the groups will crossover for the subsequent four months. The investigators will collect survey data as well as some physiologic measures including skin scanning (non-invasive), weight, and blood pressure. Effects between groups will be determined.

The investigators will conduct a full dissemination and implementation study using a type 2 hybrid effectiveness-implementation design. The investigators will conduct this study in the community and work with two vegan soul food restaurants. The investigators propose to examine the effectiveness and implementation of community-delivered, 3-month NEW Soul program among participants (N=228). Using a randomized design, the investigators will assess effectiveness of two delivery approaches: (1) In-person, live weekly classes with restaurant vouchers (intervention) or (2) restaurant voucher-only (active control). The investigators will also conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis of delivering the online intervention plus voucher vs. voucher-only with the outcome of cost/change in weight, healthy eating index, and quality adjusted life year. Lastly, the investigators will examine the implementation of the NEW Soul study with participants and intervention staff.

Multivitamin/multimineral supplements (MVI) provide important nutrition supplement to the diet of pregnant women to cover potential deficiencies and optimize nutrition status of both mom and baby, especially when the diet is suboptimal or nutrient demand is high while absorption is hindered by various factors such as genetic variance and gastrointestinal function. It is, however, largely unknown whether using an MVI during the lactating period helps improve nutrition status of mom and baby. In this double-blind, randomized, controlled trial, the investigators will recruit 7- postpartum women who exclusively breastfeed at week 5 postpartum and randomly assign them to either receive the Ritual MVI which is commercially available or a blank placebo for 10 weeks. A blank placebo is appropriate because there is currently no recommendation or scientific consensus that lactating women who are healthy and eat a normal diet would have improved nutrition status or maternal-infant health outcomes from a nutrition supplement. The investigators will collect blood and breastmilk samples at baseline and end of the study to assess nutrient status. The investigators hypothesize that consumption of a Ritual MVI leads to better nutrition status and biomarkers in maternal-child dyads compared to control.

Growth-restricted very preterm infants (VPT) are born without adequate fat mass (FM) deposits and low docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) concentrations. They often experience further declines in DHA concentrations during the initial three weeks post-birth while advancing enteral feeds and receiving lipid supplementation predominantly through parenteral nutrition. These suboptimal enteral and parenteral nutrition practices significantly heighten the risk of faltering postnatal growth. One promising approach to mitigate these issues is enteral DHA supplementation. However, it remains unclear whether the early administration of DHA through enteral supplementation could lead to a more substantial increase in head growth without affecting FM accretion in growth-restricted VPT infants. To address this question, we propose a masked randomized clinical trial involving 152 VPT infants.

This study is a randomized trial comparing 2 methods of human milk fortification for preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). All participating infants will receive a human milk diet comprising maternal and/or donor milk plus multi-component and modular fortifiers. In one group (control), the milk will be fortified according to routine standard of care. In the other group (intervention), the fortification will be individually targeted based on the results of point-of-care human milk analysis. This project aims to understand the local feasibility and acceptability of MamaMeals (a home-delivered nutritious, postpartum meal delivery program) and MamaMatters (a moderated social media-based peer support group) among peripartum women who are eligible for federal supplemental nutrition assistance programs such as The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The investigators will conduct a prospective randomized controlled trial (RCT) of these two interventions among postpartum individuals. Analyses will be performed to determine the relative risk of postpartum depressive or anxiety symptoms (primary outcome) and overall well-being and maternal/infant health (secondary/exploratory outcomes) between groups. Findings from this pilot intervention study will inform a future, large RCT exploring the effectiveness of MamaMeals and/or MamaMatters on reducing postpartum mental health symptoms and cardiovascular morbidity among individuals with food insecurity during and after pregnancy.

How do Nutrition Disorder clinical trials work?

After a researcher reviews your profile, they may choose to invite you in to a screening appointment, where they'll determine if you meet 100% of the eligibility requirements. If you do, you'll be sorted into one of the treatment groups, and receive your study drug. For some trials, there is a chance you'll receive a placebo. How do I participate in a study as a "healthy volunteer"?

Not all studies recruit healthy volunteers: usually, Phase 1 studies do. Participating as a healthy volunteer means you will go to a research facility several times over a few days or weeks to receive a dose of either the test treatment or a "placebo," which is a harmless substance that helps researchers compare results. You will have routine tests during these visits, and you'll be compensated for your time and travel, with the number of appointments and details varying by study.

What does the "phase" of a clinical trial mean?

The phase of a trial reveals what stage the drug is in to get approval for a specific condition. Phase 1 trials are the trials to collect safety data in humans. Phase 2 trials are those where the drug has some data showing safety in humans, but where further human data is needed on drug effectiveness. Phase 3 trials are in the final step before approval. The drug already has data showing both safety and effectiveness. As a general rule, Phase 3 trials are more promising than Phase 2, and Phase 2 trials are more promising than phase 1.

Do I need to be insured to participate in a Nutrition Disorder medical study?

Clinical trials are almost always free to participants, and so do not require insurance. The only exception here are trials focused on cancer, because only a small part of the typical treatment plan is actually experimental.
