Financial Education for Caregiver Burden

The intervention being tested, CONFIDENCE-AI is a refined version of the original CONFIDENCE intervention made to reduce psychological financial strain and improve management of out-of-pocket care costs while increasing caregiver resourcefulness skills. Participants will be asked to participate in a 4-week intervention that includes participation in four, synchronous group-based Zoom sessions as well as between-session activities to apply learning. Participants will also receive tailored text message notifications from the NeuViCare AI-powered app via text and will be able to submit questions to the app to receive financial well-being information related to caregiving.

Financial Navigator for Financial Hardship

Toronto, Ontario
Over one third of caregivers with a child admitted to the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) reported having difficulty making ends meet. The SickKids Medical-Financial Partnership (MFP) working group conducted in-depth interviews exploring financial needs and supports with selected caregivers in the Neonatal Neurodevelopmental Follow-up Program (NNFU). Results identified financial stress (including difficulties with employment, high cost of living, poverty, food insecurity, inaccessible supports, benefit time lines, costs of therapy) as a major theme. Caregivers generally supported the idea of hospital-based financial services. In this feasibility study we will trial a Financial Navigator Program in the NNFU.

Economic Support and Education Intervention for HIV Prevention in Young Adults

Baltimore, Maryland
The study team will conduct a two-group study to examine the efficacy of implementing an enhanced microenterprise intervention to improve economic stability and HIV preventive behaviors. The team will enroll approximately 780 young adults. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. The first group ("control") will receive text messages with information on job openings. The second group ("intervention") will receive text messages with information on job openings plus HIV prevention and employment educational sessions, mentorship, a micro-grant, and HIV behavioral economics text messages.

Community Investment for Child Health and Well-being

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Black children and adults in the United States fare worse across nearly every health indicator compared to White individuals. In Philadelphia, the location of this study, these health disparities result in a stark longevity gap, with average life expectancies in poor, predominantly Black neighborhoods being 20 years lower than in nearby affluent, predominantly White neighborhoods. The investigators will conduct a cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) of a suite of place- based and financial-wellbeing interventions at the community, organization, and individual/household levels that address the social determinants of racial health disparities. At the community level, the investigators address underinvestment in Black neighborhoods by implementing vacant lot greening, abandoned house remediation, tree planting, and trash cleanup. At the organization level, the investigators partner with community-based financial empowerment providers to develop cross-organizational infrastructure to increase reach and maximize efficiency. At the individual/household levels, the investigators increase access to public benefits, financial counseling and tax preparation services, and emergency cash assistance. The investigators will test this "big push" intervention in 60 Black neighborhood micro-clusters, with a total of 480 children. The investigators hypothesize that this "big push" intervention will have significant impact on children's health and wellbeing.

Financial Capability Support for Mental Health Issues

New Haven, Connecticut
This proposal will address financial wellbeing, an often overlooked but important factor impacting reentry for justice-involved people with mental health challenges, who are disproportionately Black and Latine. The project will change community level determinants by integrating financial capability support (one-on-one coaching and access to financial tools and services) into existing services and training bank and credit union staff to reduce discrimination. It will also support collaborative community efforts working towards upstream policy and legal reforms to reduce the incidence of those financial challenges.

Financial Support for Heart Failure

Dallas, Texas
The goal of this clinical trial is to test whether financial support in the form of a one-time $500 stipend would improve medication adherence and quality of life in low-income, socially-needy patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction in the post-discharge setting. The main questions it aims to answer are: * Will financial support improve heart failure quality of life? * Will financial support improve medication adherence? Participants will complete surveys on quality of life, social stress, and spending habits at their baseline visit. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive $500 at their baseline visit or $0 at their baseline visit. At their one month visit, quality of life and medication adherence will be assessed. These results will be compared between groups. The group that received $0 at their baseline visit will be provided $500 at their one-month visit and return for a two-month visit. At that visit, quality of life and medication adherence will be assessed. These results will be compared to their one-month results. Researchers will compare the 1-month quality of life scores and medication adherence scores between the immediate financial support vs delayed financial support. Researchers will also compare 1-month vs 2-month quality of life and adherence data for participants who were randomized to the delayed financial support group.

Financial Counseling for Cancer Patients

Yorba Linda, California
Financial hardship and health-related social needs (e.g., insecurity about food, housing, transportation, utilities) are common among patients with cancer, resulting in health disparities in cancer outcomes. Our study will test the efficacy of a multicomponent financial navigation and counseling program delivered by a financial navigator (CostCOM), vs. direct patient access to financial education materials and comprehensive list of local resources in the absence of a financial navigator (FinEd) vs. practice usual care among newly diagnosed cancer patients who screen positive for financial hardship and social needs. Investigators anticipate that both CostCOM and FinEd compared to enhanced usual care will improve cost-related cancer care nonadherence, financial worry, health insurance literacy, quality of life and sleep quality and decrease number of missed appointments.

The primary goal is to understand the potential impacts of Guaranteed Income (GI) on Black youth and young adults' financial, emotional, and physical well-being. How much do Financial Hardship clinical trials pay?

Each trial will compensate patients a different amount, but $50-100 for each visit is a fairly common range for Phase 2–4 trials (Phase 1 trials often pay substantially more). Further, most trials will cover the costs of a travel to-and-from the clinic.

How do Financial Hardship clinical trials work?

After a researcher reviews your profile, they may choose to invite you in to a screening appointment, where they'll determine if you meet 100% of the eligibility requirements. If you do, you'll be sorted into one of the treatment groups, and receive your study drug. For some trials, there is a chance you'll receive a placebo. Across Financial Hardship trials 30% of clinical trials have a placebo. Typically, you'll be required to check-in with the clinic every month or so. The average trial length for Financial Hardship is 12 months.

How do I participate in a study as a "healthy volunteer"?

Not all studies recruit healthy volunteers: usually, Phase 1 studies do. Participating as a healthy volunteer means you will go to a research facility several times over a few days or weeks to receive a dose of either the test treatment or a "placebo," which is a harmless substance that helps researchers compare results. You will have routine tests during these visits, and you'll be compensated for your time and travel, with the number of appointments and details varying by study.

What does the "phase" of a clinical trial mean?

The phase of a trial reveals what stage the drug is in to get approval for a specific condition. Phase 1 trials are the trials to collect safety data in humans. Phase 2 trials are those where the drug has some data showing safety in humans, but where further human data is needed on drug effectiveness. Phase 3 trials are in the final step before approval. The drug already has data showing both safety and effectiveness. As a general rule, Phase 3 trials are more promising than Phase 2, and Phase 2 trials are more promising than phase 1.

Do I need to be insured to participate in a Financial Hardship medical study?

Clinical trials are almost always free to participants, and so do not require insurance. The only exception here are trials focused on cancer, because only a small part of the typical treatment plan is actually experimental. For these cancer trials, participants typically need insurance to cover all the non-experimental components.
