What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

The purpose of this observational study is to compare the effectiveness of air surveillance and to better understand the relationship between household transmission and viruses detected in the air.

Participants will provide nasal swabs and have an air sample surveillance device installed in their home.

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

The ORCHARDS-AIR Study is for students in the Oregon School District who show symptoms of an acute respiratory infection or flu, like a runny nose, congestion, sneezing, sore throat, coughing, or fever. They must also score at least 2 points on the Jackson scale indicating illness severity.

Inclusion Criteria

I am a student in the Oregon School District.
I have at least 2 symptoms like a cough or fever and score 2+ on the Jackson scale.

Timeline for a Trial Participant

Screening

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial

2-4 weeks

Observation

Participants provide nasal swabs and have an air sample surveillance device installed in their home

2 weeks
Home visits for device installation and sample collection

Follow-up

Participants are monitored for virus detection and symptom surveys are conducted

2 weeks
Day 0, Day 7, Day 14 for sample collection and surveys

What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

Trial Overview

This observational study tests how well air surveillance can detect viruses and understand their spread within homes. Participants will provide nasal swabs and have an indoor air quality monitor installed to track airborne illnesses.
