Probiotic for High Altitude Acclimatization
Trial Summary
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
Yes, you will need to stop taking certain medications that could affect the study's measurements, like ibuprofen, blood pressure medications, and sleep aids. If you're on any of these, you might not be able to participate.
What evidence supports the effectiveness of the treatment SLAB51 for high altitude acclimatization?
Is the probiotic SLAB51 safe for human use?
How does the treatment SLAB51 differ from other treatments for high altitude acclimatization?
SLAB51 is unique because it is a probiotic treatment that targets the gut microbiome to help with high altitude acclimatization, unlike other treatments that may not focus on gut health. It uses beneficial bacteria to potentially improve gut function and reduce inflammation, which can be disrupted at high altitudes.13457
What is the purpose of this trial?
The goal of this study is to learn if the probiotic SLAB51 (Sivomixx800®) works to enhance acclimatization to high altitude in humans. The main questions it aims to answer are:Does SLAB51 improve oxygen saturation during high-altitude exposure? Researchers will compare SLAB51 to a placebo (a substance that contains no probiotic) to see if SLAB51 works to enhance high-altitude acclimatization.Participants will:Take SLAB51 or a placebo three times daily during two separate three-night acclimatization periods at high altitude, spaced at least six weeks apart.Complete baseline measurements at sea level. Visit the high-altitude Barcroft Station (3,801 m) at the University of California White Mountain Research Center for physiological measurements and assessments.Undergo assessments including oxygen saturation, ventilation, heart rate, blood pressure, sleep studies, cognitive assessments, exercise capacity, Acute Mountain Sickness scores, and provide blood, fecal, and urine samples for advanced analyses.
Eligibility Criteria
This trial is for people who are healthy but want to see if a probiotic called SLAB51 helps with getting used to high altitudes. Participants will take the probiotic or a placebo before and during stays at a high-altitude research station.Inclusion Criteria
