What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine if educational videos can boost genetic testing rates in individuals with ovarian or endometrial cancer. Researchers seek to discover whether these videos enhance patients' understanding of genetic testing and encourage more to undergo testing. The primary focus is on the number of participants who complete genetic testing before and after viewing the videos. Individuals with ovarian or endometrial cancer who speak English or Spanish and have not yet undergone genetic testing may be suitable candidates for this trial. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to contribute to research that could enhance understanding and accessibility of genetic testing for future patients.

Do I need to stop my current medications for this trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It seems focused on educational videos and genetic testing, so it's unlikely that your medications will be affected.

What prior data suggests that these educational videos are safe for patients with gynecologic cancer?

Research has shown that educational videos safely provide information about genetic testing for ovarian and endometrial cancer. These videos involve no physical treatments or medications, eliminating risks or side effects associated with drugs or medical procedures. The videos aim to inform and empower patients, enhancing their understanding of genetic testing and its benefits. This approach is well-received for presenting information clearly and accessibly. By simplifying complex topics, the videos help patients make informed health decisions.123

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about using educational videos for gynecologic cancer because they offer a fresh approach to patient education, particularly concerning genetic testing for ovarian and endometrial cancer. Unlike standard treatments that focus solely on medical interventions, these videos aim to empower patients with knowledge, potentially leading to earlier detection and better-informed decision-making. By simplifying complex genetic information into easy-to-understand visuals, these videos could enhance patients' understanding and engagement with their treatment plans, which is a new frontier in patient care.

What evidence suggests that educational videos are effective for increasing genetic testing awareness in gynecologic cancer?

Studies have shown that educational videos can help people understand and accept genetic testing. In this trial, participants will receive educational videos about genetic testing for ovarian and endometrial cancer. These videos can be as effective as in-person meetings with a genetic counselor in encouraging genetic testing. They also increase knowledge about genetics and reduce anxiety. For ovarian cancer, genetic testing can lead to better treatment outcomes. Research suggests that using videos to educate patients can help identify and refer those who need genetic testing, overcoming challenges like busy clinic schedules and gaps in provider knowledge.145

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for patients with ovarian or endometrial cancer. It's designed to see if educational videos can increase the rate of genetic testing, which is recommended due to the high chance that these cancers could be inherited. Participants will watch a video related to their diagnosis and may complete a survey.

Timeline for a Trial Participant

Screening

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial

2-4 weeks

Educational Intervention

Participants view educational videos about genetic testing relevant to their cancer diagnosis

1 week
1 visit (in-person or virtual)

Assessment

Chart review to evaluate rates of genetic testing ordered and referrals placed to Genetics before and after the implementation of the videos

4 weeks

Follow-up

Participants are monitored for changes in genetic testing rates and patient satisfaction

What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

Interventions

  • Educational videos
Trial Overview The study tests whether showing patients with ovarian and endometrial cancer an educational video about genetic testing influences them to get tested. The impact will be measured by comparing rates of genetic testing before and after video implementation.
