What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a new system called SMART-Wrap to improve mental health services for young people with serious emotional disorders (SED). The goal is to determine if using SMS (text messages) to regularly collect data can enhance the existing Wraparound care model, which supports youth behavioral health. Participants will receive either standard care or enhanced care with text message support to measure its effectiveness. The trial seeks youth with SED who have access to a mobile device and speak English or Spanish. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative mental health solutions for youth.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether participants need to stop taking their current medications.

What prior data suggests that the SMARTwrap system is safe for youth with serious emotional disorders?

Research has shown that the SMARTwrap system aims to improve mental health services for young people with serious emotional issues by using text messages to enhance treatment involvement and outcomes. Although specific safety data from clinical trials is unavailable, the system primarily functions as a software tool that enhances existing care methods, rather than introducing a new drug or invasive procedure. This suggests a low risk of side effects.

The SMARTwrap program is based on the proven Wraparound service model, which has been effective in communities. By sending text messages to regularly check in with users and gather their feedback, the system seeks to make care more consistent without adding extra stress. This method is considered safe because it focuses on better communication and support rather than altering physical health directly.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the SMARTwrap treatment because it enhances the traditional Wraparound service model for youth with serious emotional disturbances (SED) by integrating SMS-based communication. This SMS augmentation is a game-changer because it boosts treatment adherence and engagement, which are often challenges in mental health care. Unlike standard care, which may suffer from inconsistent data collection, SMARTwrap ensures regular and reliable self-report assessments, providing more accurate data to tailor care and improve outcomes for participants.

What evidence suggests that SMARTwrap is effective for improving care quality and family outcomes in youth with serious emotional disorders?

Studies have shown that the Wraparound service model (WSM) works well for young people with serious emotional disorders (SED). A recent review of 17 studies highlighted WSM's positive effects on mental health and its role in reducing the need for out-of-home placements. In this trial, participants in the SMARTwrap arm will receive an enhanced version of WSM that uses text messages to help them stick to their treatment and stay engaged. This system regularly collects information through self-reports, providing better insights to improve care. Overall, the added text message feature aims to make the traditional Wraparound model more consistent and effective. Participants in the Service-As-Usual (SAU) arm will receive standard Wraparound care without the SMS augmentation.12678
