What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests new, single-use bronchoscopes for lung procedures to determine if they perform as well and are as safe as reusable ones. Researchers aim to find out if doctors switch from the single-use to the reusable scope during procedures and how they rate the single-use scope on features like image quality and safety. Suitable participants have stable health, can give consent, and do not require urgent procedures or take certain blood-thinning medications. As an unphased trial, this study allows patients to contribute to advancements in medical technology and improve future lung procedures.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial does not specify if you need to stop taking your current medications, but if you are on anticoagulation or antiplatelet therapy, it must be held adequately before the procedure.

What prior data suggests that single-use bronchoscopes are safe for bronchoscopic interventions?

Research has shown that single-use bronchoscopes (SUFB) are generally safe for medical procedures. One study found that these devices greatly reduce the risk of spreading infections, which can occur with reusable bronchoscopes. Another review found that single-use bronchoscopes are easier to use and may lower infection and hospital readmission rates.

Although some negative effects have been reported, they are rare, and the benefits of using SUFBs typically outweigh these risks. Overall, evidence suggests that single-use bronchoscopes are safe for routine procedures.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Single-use bronchoscopes are unique because they offer a new way to perform bronchoscopic interventions with potentially increased safety and convenience. Unlike traditional reusable bronchoscopes, which require meticulous cleaning between uses to prevent cross-contamination, single-use bronchoscopes are designed for one-time use, reducing the risk of infection. Researchers are excited about this advancement as it could streamline procedures, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance patient safety by minimizing infection risks.

What evidence suggests that single-use bronchoscopes are effective for bronchoscopic interventions?

Studies have shown that single-use bronchoscopes, which participants in this trial will use, can significantly reduce the likelihood of patients needing to return to the hospital, cutting these rates by more than half compared to reusable bronchoscopes. This effectiveness in preventing issues that might require a hospital visit is well-documented. Research also indicates that these devices lower the risk of spreading infections, a concern with shared medical tools. Additionally, they provide strong suction and clear images, both crucial for successful bronchoscopy procedures. These advantages make single-use bronchoscopes a promising choice for safer and more efficient lung care.26789

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for adults aged 18 or older who can give informed consent and require bronchoscopic interventions. The study excludes individuals who do not meet these criteria.
