What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine if a brief online program can help people drink alcohol more responsibly. Participants will either complete the online program with weekly check-ins or only participate in weekly check-ins. The trial compares the program's effectiveness against having no program. It suits those interested in exploring ways to manage their drinking habits. As an unphased trial, it provides a unique opportunity for participants to contribute to innovative research on managing alcohol consumption.

Do I need to stop taking my current medications to join the trial?

The trial protocol does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that this online program is safe?

Research has shown that online alcohol education programs are generally safe and easy to use. Millions across the country have used these programs to make safer choices about alcohol and drug use. No reports of negative effects have emerged from participation in these educational programs. Since the treatment in this trial is an online education program, it is expected to be safe for participants. Studies of similar programs aim to create healthy environments and raise awareness of potential risks, with no known safety concerns.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about this trial because it explores a fresh approach to promoting responsible alcohol consumption through an online education program. Unlike traditional methods that might rely on in-person counseling or medication, this program uses digital technology to deliver its content, making it accessible and convenient for users. Additionally, the program includes regular check-in surveys to help participants stay engaged and track their progress over time. This innovative method of delivering support and education aims to make responsible drinking habits easier to achieve and maintain.

What evidence suggests that this online program is effective for responsible alcohol consumption?

Research has shown that online programs can help people drink less alcohol. One study found that a web-based program helped participants reduce their drinking after 6 and 12 weeks. In this trial, participants in the "Intervention only" arm will complete a brief online program designed to encourage responsible alcohol consumption. Another program, called AlcoholEdu, uses teaching and feedback to help reduce alcohol misuse, especially among college students. These studies suggest that online education can guide people to drink responsibly by providing important information and support. Therefore, online programs might be a promising way to encourage responsible alcohol use.678910

The Web-based alcohol education program significantly increased alcohol-related knowledge among 3,216 incoming freshmen, but did not lead to a reduction in high-risk drinking behaviors or alcohol-related harms, except for a decrease in playing drinking games.
This study suggests that simply providing knowledge about alcohol does not effectively change risky drinking behaviors in college students, highlighting the need for more comprehensive interventions.
