What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to compare how different protein supplements affect whole-body protein synthesis, the process by which the body makes and uses proteins. The study will examine collagen (collagen hydrolysate supplement), whey (whey protein isolate supplement), and yeast protein supplements to assess their potential to support health while offering a more sustainable alternative to animal-based proteins. It seeks healthy, recreationally active individuals who can easily incorporate protein supplements into their diets and do not have certain dietary restrictions or lifestyle habits like smoking. Participants will consume a test drink and provide breath and urine samples over eight hours for analysis.

As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to advance scientific understanding of sustainable protein sources.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial does not specify if you need to stop taking your current medications, but it does require that female participants use a specific type of birth control pill (monophasic combined oral contraceptives with 21 active pills).

Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?

A previous study found collagen supplements to be safe, with no major side effects. They are generally safe for oral consumption in doses up to 10 grams per day for up to six months. Whey protein is also likely safe for most adults when used properly. Although high doses might cause issues like more frequent bowel movements, such occurrences are uncommon.

Research has shown that yeast protein is a high-quality protein. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) confirms its safety for use in food. However, it is important not to exceed the recommended amount.

Overall, these protein supplements are generally safe for most people when used as directed.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about these protein supplements because they each offer a unique approach to enhancing whole-body protein metabolism. The Collagen Hydrolysate Supplement is derived from collagen, which may improve skin, joint, and muscle health beyond just protein synthesis. The Whey Protein Isolate Supplement is a concentrated form of whey protein, known for its fast absorption and rich amino acid profile, potentially making it a top choice for muscle recovery. Meanwhile, the Yeast Protein Supplement is experimental and offers a plant-based protein alternative that could deliver benefits without lactose or animal byproducts, appealing to those with dietary restrictions. These supplements provide varied options that go beyond traditional protein sources, catering to different dietary needs and health goals.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for protein metabolism?

This trial will compare the effects of different protein supplements on whole-body protein metabolism. Research has shown that collagen supplements, which participants in one arm of this trial will receive, can reduce joint pain in athletes and increase muscle strength. They also improve skin health by enhancing elasticity and reducing wrinkles. Another arm of this trial will test whey protein, which studies indicate can boost muscle strength and aid in gaining muscle while losing fat. It may also support heart health by managing cholesterol levels. Yeast protein, tested in a separate arm of this trial, is a newer option but has already shown potential in building muscle and strength, similar to whey. Overall, these proteins can help maintain healthy body protein levels and enhance physical performance.56789

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for adults interested in the study of protein metabolism, specifically how different types of dietary proteins affect their body's protein synthesis. Participants should be healthy with no major medical conditions that could interfere with the study.

What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

Interventions

  • Collagen Hydrolysate Supplement
  • Whey Protein Isolate Supplement
  • Yeast Protein Supplement
Trial Overview The trial is testing three supplements: Whey Protein Isolate (from milk), Collagen Hydrolysate (animal-based), and Yeast Protein (microbial-based) to see which supports whole body protein synthesis best using a 'breath test' and urine sampling methods.
