What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine if the mobile app RestoreMe can help cancer patients learn more about their health and change their behavior during treatment. It involves two groups: one starting cancer treatment and another who have completed radiation therapy. Participants should have a smartphone and be undergoing or have completed radiation therapy for cancers such as brain, lung, or breast cancer. Those with metastatic cancer or receiving palliative care are not eligible. This trial is ideal for individuals who can read and write in English and are open to using a mobile app as part of their cancer care journey. As an unphased study, this trial offers a unique opportunity for patients to explore innovative ways to enhance their cancer care experience.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. However, since patients undergoing systemic therapy are eligible, it seems likely that you can continue your current treatments.

What prior data suggests that this mobile app is safe for cancer patients?

Research has shown that the RestoreMe app is generally safe for users. Cancer patients have used it to manage symptoms and side effects. For example, patients reported less pain and fewer hospital visits while using the app. This suggests that the app is easy to use and might improve quality of life. No reports of serious side effects have emerged, indicating its safety.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

RestoreMe is unique because it leverages a mobile app to support cancer patients, which is a novel approach compared to traditional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. Unlike standard treatments that focus directly on eradicating cancer cells, RestoreMe aims to enhance patient well-being and treatment adherence through digital engagement. Researchers are excited about this because it could improve quality of life and treatment outcomes by providing personalized support and monitoring in real-time, which is not typically offered by conventional cancer therapies.

What evidence suggests that the RestoreMe app is effective for cancer patients?

Research has shown that the RestoreMe app, available to participants in this trial, can assist cancer patients in managing pain. In earlier studies, patients using the app reported reduced pain and more frequent relief. The app also aids breast cancer patients in self-care. Another study found that apps like RestoreMe can improve eating habits, which is crucial during treatment. These findings suggest that RestoreMe could be a valuable tool for cancer patients to manage symptoms and care more effectively.678910

Published Research Related to This Trial

Out of 776 health apps identified for supporting breast cancer treatment and aftercare, only 12 were classified as partially recommended and just 3 as recommended, indicating that most apps do not meet quality standards for patient support.
The evaluation criteria included user assessments and scientific benefits, highlighting that while some apps may offer potential benefits for breast cancer patients, the majority lack sufficient quality and effectiveness.
Mobile Applications Available in Germany Supporting Breast Cancer Patients During Treatment and Aftercare: a Systematic Review.Gomm, SIM., Ebner, FK., Lukac, S., et al.[2023]
In a study of 139 breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, using a mobile app for symptom tracking improved the stabilization of daily functional activity when patients reviewed their data with a physician, compared to those who used the app unsupervised.
Patients using the app reported more adverse events than those using traditional questionnaires, indicating that the app enhances awareness and reporting of chemotherapy side effects, particularly when used in a supervised setting.
A Mobile App to Stabilize Daily Functional Activity of Breast Cancer Patients in Collaboration With the Physician: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.Egbring, M., Far, E., Roos, M., et al.[2022]
A systematic review of 54 articles over the last 10 years found that mobile apps for cancer management are increasingly being researched, particularly for early detection, with a focus on melanoma.
Despite the growth in studies, many of the apps developed for cancer management tend to be removed from app stores after the research is completed, making it difficult for users to access them.
