Virtual Exercise Program for Kidney Failure
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests a virtual exercise program for individuals awaiting a kidney transplant. The goal is to determine if this 12-week online program, which combines exercise and education, is feasible and beneficial for patients. Participants will either engage in the new program, called Virtual Home-based Physical Pre-habilitation, alongside their usual care or receive only the usual care. The trial seeks individuals with end-stage kidney disease who are considered frail and are on the kidney transplant waiting list. As an unphased trial, it offers a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative research that could enhance pre-transplant care.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It focuses on exercise and education for kidney transplant candidates.
What prior data suggests that this virtual exercise program is safe for kidney transplant candidates?
Research from previous studies shows that home-based exercise programs, including virtual ones, are generally safe for people with chronic kidney disease. Participants have tolerated these programs well, with few reports of side effects. One study found that 12 weeks of home exercise with remote guidance improved participants' physical abilities without major safety concerns. This suggests that the virtual exercise program for kidney failure is likely safe for participants.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the virtual home-based physical pre-habilitation program for kidney failure because it offers a unique approach that combines exercise and educational interventions tailored for patients awaiting kidney transplants. Unlike traditional care, which typically involves in-person physical therapy or exercise routines, this program can be accessed remotely, providing convenience and flexibility for patients who may have mobility or transportation challenges. Additionally, by integrating educational components with exercise, it empowers patients with knowledge to better manage their health, potentially improving outcomes and readiness for surgery.
What evidence suggests that this virtual exercise program is effective for kidney failure?
Research has shown that home-based exercise programs, accessible online, are generally safe for individuals with chronic kidney disease. One study found that an 8-week exercise program reduced frailty, which includes weakness and risk of falling, in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease. In this trial, participants in the "Pre-habilitation plus usual outpatient care" arm will engage in a virtual home-based physical pre-habilitation program, incorporating exercise and education. Participants in these exercise programs demonstrated improved physical abilities, which is crucial for those awaiting a kidney transplant. Staying active may help individuals prepare for surgery and recover more quickly afterward. Early findings suggest this approach could effectively lower risks before and after the transplant.12346

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for English or French-speaking adults over 18 with end-stage kidney disease who are frail to very frail and on the transplant list at specific Canadian hospitals. They must be able to use videoconferencing, either alone or with help, but those without internet can borrow a tablet.Inclusion Criteria
