What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to compare the effectiveness of two hydration drinks, Berry Propel Fitness Water and Essentia Hydroboost Raspberry Pomegranate, against regular water in maintaining hydration. Researchers will assess whether these drinks better maintain hydration by measuring fluid retention and their effects on mood, digestion, and blood pressure. Participants should be non-smokers who consume a lot of water daily, do not have major health issues such as heart or kidney problems, and can abstain from alcohol and caffeine before the test. As an unphased trial, this study allows participants to contribute to understanding hydration solutions without the constraints of traditional clinical trial phases.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

Participants cannot take medications that may alter fluid retention or electrolyte levels, such as certain diabetes medications, laxatives, diuretics, and others. A nurse practitioner will review medications to determine eligibility.

Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?

Research shows that both Berry Propel Fitness Water and Essentia Hydroboost Raspberry Pomegranate are generally safe to drink. Propel is a zero-calorie, zero-sugar fitness water with sodium as its main electrolyte, aiding hydration. It also contains vitamins C, B3, B5, B6, and E, which are safe when consumed in moderation.

Essentia Hydroboost is designed for better hydration and includes water, sugar, natural flavors, and electrolytes like sodium citrate and potassium bicarbonate, common in many hydration drinks. Like Propel, it is safe for most people unless specific dietary needs or health issues arise from its ingredients.

Smart Water, used as the control in the trial, is a popular brand of distilled water with added electrolytes and is safe to drink.

In summary, both Propel and Essentia Hydroboost are well-tolerated hydration options. No major safety concerns exist for healthy individuals consuming them as part of a balanced diet.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial's treatments?

Researchers are excited about the hydration solutions being tested—Berry Propel Fitness Water, Essentia Hydroboost Raspberry Pomegranate, and Smart Water—because they offer a unique approach to improving hydration. Unlike traditional hydration methods that typically involve plain water or electrolyte solutions, these treatments combine flavored water with added electrolytes and nutrients designed to optimize fluid absorption and retention. Berry Propel Fitness Water and Essentia Hydroboost Raspberry Pomegranate stand out due to their specific blend of electrolytes and flavors, which could enhance palatability and encourage better hydration habits. Smart Water offers a distinct option with its vapor-distilled water and added electrolytes for taste, catering to those seeking a more refined hydration experience. Researchers hope to discover if these innovative solutions can more effectively maintain hydration levels compared to standard options.

What evidence suggests that this trial's hydration solutions could be effective for improving hydration?

This trial will compare the hydration effects of Berry Propel Fitness Water, Essentia Hydroboost Raspberry Pomegranate, and Smart Water. Studies have shown that Berry Propel Fitness Water, with its essential vitamins and minerals, hydrates better than plain water. The added minerals replace those lost through sweat, benefiting active individuals. Essentia Hydroboost Raspberry Pomegranate contains even more minerals and B vitamins, potentially enhancing hydration more than regular water. It boasts 30 times more minerals than other leading waters, which may prolong hydration. Both drinks aim to improve hydration beyond what plain water offers. Participants in this trial will consume these beverages in different sequences to evaluate their hydration effectiveness.678910

In a study involving 12 physically active girls aged 9-12, flavored drinks, especially those with carbohydrates and sodium, increased voluntary fluid intake during exercise in the heat, with the highest intake observed with the carbohydrate and sodium drink (CNa).
Despite the increased intake with flavored drinks, the girls maintained hydration effectively with unflavored water, indicating that they could stay hydrated even without flavored options.

Gatorade was the only beverage among those tested that effectively restored hydration status after exercise-induced dehydration, while Apfelschorle, Evian, and San Benedetto mineral water left participants in a lower hydration state.
Despite common perceptions, many traditional rehydration drinks do not provide sufficient sodium to restore fluid balance after dehydration, highlighting the need for beverages with appropriate electrolyte compositions.

The study successfully developed fruit-based recovery drinks that maintain optimal osmolality levels (388 to 607 mOsm/kg) while incorporating essential nutrients like protein, prebiotics, and electrolytes, making them effective for hydration and recovery after exercise.
All tested drinks exhibited satisfactory sensory qualities, indicating that it is possible to create palatable recovery beverages that are both nutritious and hydrating, addressing a common challenge in sports nutrition.
