What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine if the virus causing COVID-19 can be detected in the stools of infected individuals. Participants will not receive any treatment; instead, researchers will collect and analyze stool samples to study the gut flora, which includes the community of bacteria and other organisms in the intestines. This research can help scientists understand how the virus spreads and behaves in the body. Individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 by RT-PCR within the last week may be suitable for this trial. As an unphased study, this trial allows participants to contribute to important research that could enhance understanding of COVID-19 transmission.

Do I need to stop my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about this trial because it explores a unique aspect of COVID-19 infection: the role of gut flora. Unlike typical treatments that focus on antiviral medications or vaccines, this study aims to understand how the microbiome, or the collection of microorganisms in our gut, might influence COVID-19 outcomes. By sequencing the microbiome from stool samples of the general population, scientists hope to uncover insights that could lead to new strategies for managing or preventing COVID-19 in the future. This approach could pave the way for microbiome-based interventions, offering a novel perspective beyond traditional treatments.
