Trial Summary

What is the purpose of this trial? The purpose of this study is to evaluate a culturally grounded training program, xaʔtus (meaning First Face) for Mental Health. This program will train community members in how to recognize and respond to youth and adults experiencing mental health crises and ways to serve as a bridge between these individuals and the help they need. All Healing Lodge staff are being asked to complete First Face training. To evaluate First Face, the investigators will ask all trainees to complete surveys before and after training, and again 3 months later. These surveys will measure knowledge about mental health and addiction, as well as the ability and confidence to respond appropriately to mental health crises. The study will help the investigators understand whether the First Face training program influences mental health and attitudes, as well as responses to mental health crisis situations.

How is the First Face Training for Mental Health Crises treatment different from other treatments?

The First Face Training for Mental Health Crises is unique because it focuses on training individuals to recognize early signs of mental health issues and provide initial support, similar to first aid, rather than being a direct medical treatment. This approach empowers people to guide those in crisis towards professional help, which is different from traditional treatments that typically involve medication or therapy sessions.

Mental health first aid training by e-learning: a randomized controlled trial. [2022]Mental Health First Aid training is a course for the public that teaches how to give initial help to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The present study evaluated the effects of Mental Health First Aid training delivered by e-learning on knowledge about mental disorders, stigmatizing attitudes and helping behaviour.
Mental Health First Aid is an effective public health intervention for improving knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour: a meta-analysis. [2022]Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a standardized, psychoeducational programme developed to empower the public to approach, support and refer individuals in distress by improving course participants' knowledge, attitudes and behaviours related to mental ill-health. The present paper aims to synthesize published evaluations of the MHFA programme in a meta-analysis to estimate its effects and potential as a public mental health awareness-increasing strategy. Fifteen relevant papers were identified through a systematic literature search. Standardized effect sizes were calculated for three different outcome measures: change in knowledge, attitudes, and helping behaviours. The results of the meta-analysis for these outcomes yielded a mean effect size of Glass's Δ = 0.56 (95% CI = 0.38 - 0.74; p

[First Aid for Mental Health in Germany]. [2020]Early recognition of mental disorders and psychological crisis is essential for successful therapy and good outcome of affected persons. Relatives and affected persons need health knowledge in order to identify early symptoms and psychological crisis and to guide patients to the health care system. Mental Health First Aid is a lay-based program of health education, which is evidence-based and wide-spread in English-speaking countries. In a 12-hour "Standard Course" lay persons learn basic knowledge of mental disorders and of the health care system in order to be able to access persons with beginning mental disorders or in crisis, to provide First Aid and to give advice about professional help. Currently, Mental Health First Aid is introduced in Switzerland and Germany.
Effectiveness of mental health first aid training in Sweden. A randomized controlled trial with a six-month and two-year follow-up. [2021]According to a recent report from the European Brain Council and the European Colleague of Neuropsychopharmacology the one year prevalence of some kind of mental disorder is around 27% among the adult population in Europe. Research has shown a lack of mental health literacy in the population in general and it is thus important to find ways to improve the public's knowledge and skills to provide first hand support to people with mental disorders. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training program that has shown positive changes in knowledge and helping behavior. This study investigates if MHFA training in a Swedish context provides a sustained improvement in knowledge about mental disorders, a better ability to be helpful in contacts with people who are ill and if it changes attitudes in a positive direction.
Mental health first aid training for the Bhutanese refugee community in the United States. [2020]The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for Bhutanese refugee community leaders in the U.S. We hypothesized that training refugee leaders would improve knowledge of mental health problems and treatment process and decrease negative attitudes towards people with mental illness.
Long-term effects of Youth Mental Health First Aid training: randomized controlled trial with 3-year follow-up. [2021]Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training teaches community members how to provide initial support to someone with a mental health problem. Key gaps in the evidence base supporting the training are the longevity of effects beyond 6 months, effects on mental health first aid behavior, and the impact of support on the recipient of aid. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the Youth MHFA course 3 years after training.
