Mindfulness-Based Therapy for Chronic Lower Back Pain
(IMPACT Trial)
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to evaluate how mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) can assist individuals with chronic low back pain (cLBP). Researchers seek to identify specific patterns using artificial intelligence to predict who will benefit most from MBSR. Participants will engage in an 8-week mindfulness program to determine if it reduces their pain. Individuals who have experienced low back pain for at least 3 months and feel pain on most days might be suitable candidates. Participants must speak English and be able to provide consent online or by phone. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative research that could enhance pain management strategies.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.
What prior data suggests that Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is safe for chronic lower back pain?
Research has shown that mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is generally safe for individuals with chronic low back pain. Studies have found that this method can significantly improve pain levels and daily activities. These studies provide no strong evidence that MBSR causes any serious side effects.
One review found that MBSR might change brain areas involved in managing pain and stress, suggesting it could help individuals cope with pain more effectively. While some studies show mixed results regarding its impact on pain intensity, its safety remains well-supported. Overall, MBSR appears to be a safe option for managing chronic low back pain.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is unique because it approaches chronic lower back pain not with medication or physical therapy, but through mental and emotional techniques. Unlike standard treatments like pain relievers and physical therapy, MBSR involves an 8-week program that teaches mindfulness and stress reduction to help manage pain. Researchers are excited about this approach because it offers a holistic option that empowers patients to control their pain through mindfulness, potentially reducing reliance on medications and their side effects.
What evidence suggests that Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is effective for chronic lower back pain?
Research has shown that Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), which participants in this trial will receive, can effectively lessen pain for people with chronic lower back pain. Studies have found that MBSR improves back pain and physical ability, with noticeable benefits after 8 weeks and lasting up to 6 months. Participants reported better pain relief and fewer limitations compared to usual care alone. Additionally, MBSR saves money, making it a valuable option for managing chronic lower back pain. These findings suggest that MBSR is a promising treatment for reducing pain and improving quality of life.46789

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for English-speaking individuals who have had chronic low back pain for at least 3 months, with pain on most days in the past 6 months. Participants must be able to consent and plan to stay at a participating clinic for over 6 months. It's not suitable for those with recent severe symptoms, unexplained weight loss or fever, pregnant women, or people with metastatic cancer.Inclusion Criteria
