Meal Kit and Nutrition Education for Healthy Eating
(PROJECT EATT Trial)
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests a new approach to help people eat healthier by providing meal kits and nutrition education. The goal is to determine if these meal kits can improve food security, diet quality, mental health, quality of life, and heart health compared to receiving general nutrition advice. One group of participants will receive meal kits and education, while the other group will get standard nutrition information. The trial seeks adults over 40 with a household income below a certain level, who have obesity (BMI over 30) and conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, and live in the Greater Lowell area. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative research that could enhance dietary habits and overall health.
What prior data suggests that this meal kit and nutrition education intervention is safe?
Research has shown that meal kits and nutrition education programs are generally safe and easy to use. One study found that meal kits can improve access to food and diet quality without safety concerns. Participants in similar programs reported positive experiences and no issues with the meal kits themselves. Additionally, a review of meal kit delivery services found that they offer healthy options that meet safety standards. This evidence suggests that the program is likely safe for participants.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the Meal Kit and Nutrition Education treatment because it offers a hands-on, practical approach to improving dietary habits. Unlike the standard care, which typically provides general dietary guidelines and recipes, this treatment delivers meal kits directly to participants, making healthy eating more accessible and straightforward. Additionally, the inclusion of tailored nutrition education materials further supports individuals in making informed food choices, potentially leading to better long-term health outcomes.
What evidence suggests that the Meal Kit and Nutrition Education intervention could be effective for improving dietary quality and reducing food insecurity?
Research has shown that meal kits simplify meal decisions and encourage families to cook together. People using meal kits often notice positive changes in their eating habits, which can lead to healthier choices in the future. In this trial, participants in the Meal Kit and Nutrition Education arm will receive both meal kits and nutrition education materials. Nutrition education programs teach about food and healthy eating, leading to better health. These programs can improve body weight, waist size, and emotional health. Together, meal kits and nutrition education might help people eat better and feel more secure about having enough food.45678
