Black Rice Extract for Depression
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests whether black rice extract can boost BDNF levels, a molecule important for brain function, in healthy people. Participants will consume either the black rice extract or a placebo to observe any changes in their BDNF levels. It suits healthy individuals without major health issues who are not taking certain supplements or following special diets. As an unphased trial, this study offers participants a unique opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research on brain health.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial protocol does not specify if you need to stop taking your current medications, but it does require stopping pre- and/or probiotic and/or polyphenol supplements from 2 days before the screening and throughout the study.
Is there any evidence suggesting that black rice extract is likely to be safe for humans?
Research has shown that black rice extract (BRE) is generally safe for people. One study found that a special ingredient from black sticky rice, similar to BRE, reduced anxiety, depression, and stress in adults without major side effects. Another study on rice bran extract, related to black rice, improved mild-to-moderate depression over eight weeks, also without significant negative effects.
These findings suggest that black rice extract is well-tolerated. However, since this trial tests a specific dose and formula, individual reactions may vary. Overall, current evidence indicates that BRE is safe for human use, with few reported side effects.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Unlike standard depression treatments, which typically involve medications like SSRIs and SNRIs that adjust brain chemicals, black rice extract offers a natural alternative. Researchers are excited because black rice extract contains high levels of antioxidants, which may reduce inflammation and oxidative stress linked to depression. This unique approach taps into the potential of plant-based compounds, offering a promising new avenue for managing depression symptoms with possibly fewer side effects.
What evidence suggests that black rice extract could be an effective treatment for depression?
Research shows that black rice extract (BRE) might help with depression. One study found that certain compounds in black rice, called anthocyanins, have a strong antidepressant effect. They may work by influencing how the body handles stress. Another study found that a similar ingredient from rice helped reduce anxiety, depression, and stress in adults. These findings suggest that BRE could be promising for improving mood. In this trial, participants will receive either black rice extract or a placebo. Although this study focuses on healthy volunteers, earlier research results are encouraging.16789
