Summary

This trial will explore whether increasing self-compassion among university students who are struggling with their mental health will decrease shame and increase willingness to seek mental health treatment, compared to increasing mental health literacy or no intervention.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for University of Waterloo undergraduate students who are experiencing psychological distress, as indicated by a score of 8 or more on the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale. Students must have a SONA account to participate.
What is being tested?
The study tests if a self-compassion workshop can reduce shame and increase willingness to seek mental health treatment compared to a mental health literacy workshop or control group. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of these three interventions.
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves workshops focused on education and personal development, there are no direct medical side effects. However, discussing sensitive topics like mental health could potentially cause emotional discomfort.
