Community Health Worker Support for Stress
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to explore how a promotora (community health worker) can improve access to mental health services for Latinx and Native American adults experiencing high stress. Participants will either receive direct support from a promotora through a structured program called Protocolized Promotora-Led Navigation or continue with their usual care and resources. Those experiencing moderate or higher stress levels and who speak English or Spanish might be a good fit for this trial. The trial focuses on assessing the feasibility of this approach and its impact on well-being and stress reduction. As an unphased trial, it offers participants the chance to contribute to innovative research that could enhance mental health support in their communities.
What prior data suggests that this protocol is safe for improving behavioral health access?
Research has shown that community health workers and promotoras (trained community health supporters) effectively reach underserved communities and improve access to healthcare. Although specific safety data for the Protocolized Promotora-Led Navigation intervention is not available, similar programs led by community health workers have been well-received and have not raised significant safety concerns. These programs typically focus on education and support rather than medical procedures, making them generally safe. This pilot study aims to evaluate how well this support can improve access to mental health services for Latinx and Native American adults. Based on related research, no major safety issues are expected.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the Protocolized Promotora-Led Navigation because it offers a culturally tailored approach to managing stress that leverages community health workers, or promotoras, who are deeply familiar with the cultural context of Indigenous peoples. Unlike standard treatments for stress, which often involve generic counseling or medication, this method emphasizes cultural healing practices and personal navigation support. By focusing on cultural connection and personalized guidance, it aims to enhance mental wellness in a way that resonates more deeply with the participants' cultural identities, potentially leading to more effective and meaningful outcomes.
What evidence suggests that the protocolized promotora-led navigation is effective for improving behavioral health access?
Research shows that mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programs effectively lower stress and improve mental well-being. Studies have consistently found that MBSR reduces anxiety and stress while enhancing coping skills. Participants in similar stress management programs have reported increased confidence in handling stress. Mindfulness practices, like those in MBSR, are linked to better mental health, including less depression and burnout. In this trial, participants in the Protocolized Promotora-Led Navigation arm will receive a structured intervention that includes stress reduction techniques. These findings suggest that this intervention could improve access to mental health care and reduce stress in underserved communities.678910

Active Control
Promotora Support for Cultural Healing Practices: Participants assigned to the wait-list control condition will receive standard promotora support as typically provided through CANA's Indigenous Peoples Cultural Arts Healing Center and the Native American Health Center (NAHC), which may include general health promotion, wellness education, and linkage to cultural healing resources. After completing the 12-week wait-list period and follow-up assessment, participants in this group will be offered the full CAPAZ protocolized navigation intervention.
