What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests an online program called Family Check-Up (FCU) to prevent emotional and behavioral issues in middle-school students. The program targets students at risk of problems such as poor grades, frequent absences, or behavioral issues, especially those returning to school after the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents will gain access to an FCU app and receive support from a mental health coach to enhance parenting skills and better support their children. This trial may suit middle-schoolers facing challenges like frequent discipline referrals or low grades. As an unphased trial, it offers a unique opportunity to access innovative support tools for children's well-being.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether participants need to stop taking their current medications.

What prior data suggests that the Family Check-Up Online is safe for middle-school students?

Research shows that the Family Check-Up Online (FCU Online) is safe and easy to use. Past studies have demonstrated that this program improves family relationships and children's mental health without causing major problems. As a web-based tool, it is easily accessible from home and offers resources and coaching to help parents with skills like communication and setting rules.

Parents who used the app reported better family interactions and fewer behavior issues in their children. The additional telehealth coaching supports healthy habits and positive parenting. Since FCU Online focuses on family support and parenting, it does not involve medications or physical procedures, reducing risks compared to drug trials. Overall, the app and coaching serve as a helpful resource, making it a safe choice for families aiming to enhance their home environment and children's well-being.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the Family Check-Up (FCU) treatment for disruptive behaviors because it leverages technology to provide personalized support to parents. Unlike traditional methods that might involve in-person therapy sessions, FCU offers an online app paired with telehealth coaching, making it more accessible and convenient for families. The app includes a quick assessment and delivers tailored feedback, along with interactive tools like videos and parenting tips to help parents improve their skills. This approach not only makes support more readily available but also empowers parents with resources to address challenges in real-time, potentially leading to more effective outcomes.

What evidence suggests that the Family Check-Up is effective for preventing disruptive behaviors?

Research shows that the Family Check-Up (FCU) Online program helps reduce disruptive behavior in children. In this trial, some participants will receive the FCU Online program with telehealth coaching. Studies also find that it improves parenting skills, leading to better behavior in children. These improvements include more positive interactions between parents and children and greater parental involvement in their child's life. Additionally, online parenting programs like FCU have effectively reduced child behavior problems. Overall, the FCU Online approach has shown promise in supporting families, especially during challenging times like returning to school after the COVID-19 pandemic.15678
