Online Pivotal Response Treatment for Autism
(PRT-O Trial)
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores how well parents can learn to use Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) through an online course to assist their children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The goal is to determine if parents can effectively apply the techniques learned online to improve their child's communication skills. The trial seeks parents with English-speaking children aged 2 to 5 years with ASD and notable communication challenges, who can commit to a 12-week online learning program. Parents will watch video lessons and practice the techniques at home. Participants should not have extensive previous experience with PRT or be receiving more than 15 hours of in-home therapy per week. As an unphased trial, this study offers parents a unique opportunity to contribute directly to innovative research that could enhance their child's communication skills.
Do I need to stop my current medications for the trial?
No, you don't need to stop your current medications, but they must be stable for at least 1 month before starting the trial and should not change during the study.
What prior data suggests that this online training course is safe for parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Research has shown that Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) is safe and has been widely studied as a method to assist children with autism. Over 20 studies suggest that PRT can enhance communication skills in many children with autism. These studies have reported no major side effects, supporting its safety. Given PRT's effectiveness in various settings, the online version (PRT-O) is also expected to be safe. The online course is designed to teach parents how to use PRT techniques, focusing on learning and applying these skills at home.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the Pivotal Response Treatment Online (PRT-O) Course because it offers a new way to support children with autism by empowering parents with an online learning platform. Unlike traditional in-person therapies, PRT-O is delivered entirely online, making it more accessible for families who may have difficulty traveling to sessions. This flexibility allows parents to learn and practice pivotal response techniques at their own pace, integrating these strategies into everyday interactions with their child. By leveraging the convenience of online education, PRT-O could potentially broaden the reach and impact of autism interventions.
What evidence suggests that the PRT-O course is effective for training parents of children with autism?
Research has shown that Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) improves social communication skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Studies have found that children receiving this treatment make significant progress in language and communication. Parents who learn PRT techniques can also use them effectively to support their children. In this trial, participants will either take the Pivotal Response Treatment Online (PRT-O) Course or join a Delayed Treatment Group. An online version of PRT, like the one under study, has demonstrated effectiveness and positive reception. Overall, PRT shows promise in addressing key symptoms of ASD and enhancing communication skills.678910
