Trial Summary

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial requires that any behavioral and medication treatments for anxiety or insistence on sameness be stable for at least two months before starting the study, and no changes should be made during the trial.

What data supports the effectiveness of the treatment Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) for autism?

Research shows that SPACE, a parent-based treatment, significantly reduced anxiety symptoms and family accommodation in autistic children, with 86.66% of participants showing reliable improvement post-treatment, and these benefits were maintained at a 2-month follow-up.12345

Is the Parent-Mediated Intervention for Autism safe for humans?

The Parent-Mediated Intervention, including SPACE, has been found to be feasible and acceptable with no reported adverse events in a pilot trial involving autistic children. Additionally, a systematic review found no significant adverse effects associated with parent-mediated interventions for autism spectrum disorders.23567

How is the SPACE treatment for autism different from other treatments?

SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) is unique because it focuses on reducing family accommodation (changes parents make to ease their child's distress) to help manage anxiety in children with autism. Unlike traditional treatments like cognitive-behavioral therapy or medication, SPACE is a parent-based program that involves 13 weekly sessions and has shown to significantly reduce anxiety symptoms and improve family dynamics.24589

What is the purpose of this trial?

This study will examine the potential effectiveness of a virtually delivered parent-mediated intervention for insistence on sameness behaviors in autism and investigate 1) whether caregivers can learn to deliver the adapted Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood emotions (SPACE) intervention for IS via telehealth and 2) whether children will show greater improvement in IS behaviors.

Trial Overview The study tests a virtual program called Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE), adapted for 'insistence on sameness' behaviors in autistic children. It aims to see if caregivers can effectively use the method through telehealth and if it improves the children's behavior.

Findings from Research

In a pilot trial of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) involving boys aged 5-12 with high functioning autism, the intervention led to significant reductions in parents' perceptions of their child's problem behaviors and atypicality, along with increased child adaptability.
The study highlighted the importance of shared positive affect between parents and children during therapy, as increased parent positive affect was linked to better perceptions of child improvement in behavior and functioning.

The PEERS social skills intervention for adolescents with high-functioning autism significantly reduced family chaos compared to a waitlist control group, indicating a positive impact on family dynamics.
Parents participating in the PEERS program reported increased self-efficacy in their parenting, suggesting that the intervention not only benefits the child but also supports the parents' confidence and well-being.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) significantly reduced parent-reported autism symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorders and anxiety, with a strong effect size of 0.77 based on a pilot study of 19 children.
The benefits of CBT were not only evident immediately after treatment but were also maintained at a 3-month follow-up, suggesting lasting improvements in social communication and emotion regulation skills.
