What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial examines how meal planning and affordable grocery delivery can aid weight loss and improve eating habits in multigenerational Latino households. The treatment, called FoodRx (a medically tailored nutrition program), provides weekly grocery deliveries for six months. Households with at least two adults seeking weight loss and one child under 18 may qualify. Participants must have internet access and should not have conditions like chronic kidney disease or require insulin for diabetes. As a Phase 3 trial, this study represents the final step before FDA approval, offering participants the opportunity to contribute to a potentially groundbreaking treatment.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial requires that you do not use medications that interfere with weight loss, such as steroids, certain anti-depressants, and anti-seizure medications. If you are on these medications, you may need to stop taking them to participate.

What prior data suggests that FoodRx is safe for weight loss and dietary quality?

Research shows that FoodRx, a program providing groceries tailored to medical needs, has been implemented in various locations with positive results. Studies have found the program safe and easy to use. For example, FoodRx helps individuals manage their health by providing access to nutritious food, which can also alleviate financial stress.

No major problems have been linked to FoodRx. In past studies, participants received meals and groceries designed for their health needs without significant issues. The program aims to improve diet quality and support better health.

Overall, the FoodRx program has been tested and proven to be a safe choice for those seeking to enhance their diet and health through personalized grocery delivery.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial's treatment?

Researchers are excited about the FoodRx treatment because it offers a fresh approach to healthy eating and weight loss by providing curated meal plans and direct grocery deliveries. Unlike standard treatments that often rely on self-guided diet changes or medications, FoodRx delivers nutritious groceries right to participants' doors, making healthy eating more convenient and accessible. This method targets the root of unhealthy eating habits by simplifying access to healthy food and reducing the effort required to maintain a balanced diet. This personalized and practical strategy has the potential to significantly improve adherence to healthy eating, leading to more sustainable weight loss outcomes.

What evidence suggests that FoodRx might be an effective treatment for weight loss?

Research has shown that programs like FoodRx, which provide meal plans and grocery deliveries, can improve health. In this trial, some households will receive weekly grocery deliveries for six months as part of the FoodRx program. Studies have found that participants in similar programs feel better and worry less about food security. Meals specifically designed for health, such as those from FoodRx, are linked to improved health for individuals needing better nutrition. Evidence suggests these programs can lead to healthier eating and potential weight loss. Overall, the data supports that FoodRx enhances nutrition and health.16789

The 'Prevention Produce' program, which combined fruit and vegetable prescriptions with a month-long educational curriculum, successfully increased fruit and vegetable consumption among nine families at risk of chronic disease and food insecurity.
Participants reported a greater understanding of the health benefits of produce, and the mentorship aspect of the program was positively received by both families and medical students, highlighting its potential as a model for integrating preventive health strategies in healthcare systems.

In a pilot study involving 172 participants from food-insecure areas, a collaborative food prescription program led to a remarkable 94.1% decrease in food insecurity, highlighting its effectiveness in improving access to nutritious food.
Participants received an average of 29.2 pounds of fresh produce and reported high satisfaction with the program, indicating strong community support and the potential for positive health outcomes.

Meal replacement products (MRPs) are effective for weight loss in obesity management, but are prescribed to only about 7% of patients by healthcare professionals (HCPs), despite over 70% having prescribed them at some point.
Safety concerns, particularly regarding long-term weight loss durability and the risk of weight cycling, hinder MRP prescriptions; however, HCPs with formal training in MRPs are 66% more likely to prescribe them, indicating that education could improve their use.
