Mouthrinses for Oral Microbiome Health
(Microbiome Trial)
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to evaluate how two over-the-counter mouthwashes affect bacteria and viruses in the mouth and gut. Participants will use either Listerine rinse, Lumineux Oral Essentials rinse, or water as a mouth rinse twice daily. The study lasts about six months and involves five short visits. It suits individuals with healthy gums or gums that bleed when brushing, who have not taken antibiotics in the past three months, and have at least 20 teeth.
As an unphased trial, this study allows participants to contribute to important research on oral health products.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. However, it does exclude individuals who have taken antibiotics in the previous 3 months.
Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?
Research has shown that both Listerine and Lumineux Oral Essentials mouthwashes are generally safe. Listerine is popular and widely used, with studies indicating it effectively kills germs that cause bad breath and helps maintain gum health. Most people can use Listerine without issues.
Lumineux Oral Essentials is a non-toxic, alcohol-free mouthwash certified by MADE SAFE, meaning it contains no harmful chemicals. Studies have shown that Lumineux does not significantly disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the mouth, indicating safety.
Both mouthwashes are widely used and available without a prescription, suggesting they are safe for everyday use. However, those with specific health concerns should consult a healthcare provider before starting any new treatment.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about these treatments because they focus on improving oral microbiome health in unique ways. Listerine rinse is well-known for its antiseptic properties, which help reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth. On the other hand, Lumineux Oral Essentials rinse stands out due to its natural ingredients, including essential oils and non-toxic components that aim to balance the oral microbiome without harsh chemicals. This trial is exploring whether these distinct approaches can effectively promote oral health and potentially offer better alternatives to standard mouthwashes.
What evidence suggests that this trial's mouthrinses could be effective for oral microbiome health?
In this trial, participants will join different treatment arms to evaluate the effectiveness of mouthrinses on oral microbiome health. Research has shown that Listerine mouthwash, used by participants in one arm, effectively kills germs causing bad breath and gum problems. It provides 24-hour protection against odors and helps reduce plaque, improving gum health. Listerine works by quickly neutralizing odor and killing germs.
In another arm, participants will use Lumineux Oral Essentials mouthwash. Studies on Lumineux have yielded mixed results. Some research suggests it can reduce certain types of bacteria in the mouth and gut, but it does not significantly alter the overall bacteria in the mouth after 30 and 90 days. Lumineux is alcohol-free and gentle, but its effect on mouth bacteria is less clear compared to Listerine.13467Who Is on the Research Team?
