Study Summary

This trial is testing whether a culturally-based tele-consult program can improve palliative care for African American and White patients with a life-limiting illness.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for African American and White rural elders aged 55 or older with serious illnesses like cancer, heart disease, or neurodegenerative diseases. They must have a caregiver involved in their care, not be expected to die within the next year, and able to do interviews. Those already in hospice care or without a caregiver cannot join.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study compares two approaches: a culturally-based palliative care program delivered through tele-consultations versus usual hospital care. It aims to see if this tailored telemedicine approach can reduce symptom burden among these patients.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves non-medical interventions focusing on palliative care consultation rather than drugs or medical procedures, traditional side effects are not applicable. However, there may be emotional or psychological impacts from discussing end-of-life issues.
