Study Summary

This trial is testing how well a web-based tool can help improve screening rates for colorectal cancer.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for individuals overdue for colorectal cancer screening, who haven't had a colonoscopy in the last 10 years or a flexible sigmoidoscopy in the past 5 years. Participants must be registered with and actively using the HVMA patient portal (MyHealth) and receiving care at an HVMA center.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study is testing whether personal electronic health records can improve screening rates for colorectal cancer. It's a randomized trial, which means participants will be randomly assigned to either use a web-based risk assessment tool or continue with their usual care routine.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves the use of electronic tools rather than medications, traditional side effects are not applicable. However, there may be indirect consequences such as privacy concerns or anxiety from increased awareness about cancer risks.

Study Objectives

Outcome measures can provide a clearer picture of what you can expect from a treatment.
Primary outcome measures
Receipt of colorectal cancer screening exam (fecal occult blood test, flexible sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy) within 4 months following delivery of an electronic message within the personal health record
Secondary outcome measures
Distribution of risk-status among participants who complete the web-based risk-assessment tool
Proportion of participants who access the web-based risk-assessment tool
