Study Summary

This trial is testing whether T-cell depleted, CD34+ stem cells can help patients with aplastic anemia who are undergoing allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for patients with severe aplastic anemia, which means their bone marrow isn't making enough blood cells. They should have low counts of granulocytes, platelets, or reticulocytes and may have had serious infections due to a weak immune system. Participants need a closely matched family donor for stem cell transplant but can't join if they have kidney, heart, lung problems, uncontrolled diabetes, certain other illnesses or cancers (except some skin cancers), are pregnant/nursing or unable to use birth control.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests whether adding donor T-cell depleted CD34+ peripheral blood stem cells to standard allogeneic bone marrow transplantation helps in better engraftment and reduces graft-versus-host disease in aplastic anemia patients. It aims to improve the success rate of transplants without increasing complications.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Potential side effects include those related to bone marrow transplant like infection risk due to low immunity, reactions from the infusion of stem cells, graft-versus-host disease where donated cells attack the patient's body tissues and complications from immunosuppressive drugs used.

Is my participation eligible for this research endeavor?

"To be eligible for this research, individuals must suffer from aplastic anemia and fall within the age range of 15 to 55. Thus far, recruitment efforts have yielded 3 potential participants."

Answered by AI

Are older individuals in their 80s being accepted into the experiment?

"According to the participation parameters, this medical trial is open to patients between 15 and 55 years old. Alternatively, there are 167 trials for minors and 315 research studies catered towards seniors in age."

Answered by AI

Is it possible to still become an active participant in this research project?

"According to the clinicaltrials.gov website, this research is currently not accepting new participants. The original posting was on April 1st 2001 and it has been revised most recently in June 2005. Although there are no open recruitment slots at present, 410 other medical studies are presently seeking out volunteers."
