CYCLE Trial Summary

This trial is testing whether in-bed cycling can help people recover from being critically ill.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for adults over 18 in the ICU, on mechanical ventilation for ≤4 days, and expected to stay at least 2 more days. They must have been able to walk independently before ICU admission. Exclusions include severe cognitive issues pre-ICU, certain acute conditions, pregnancy, high risk of hospital mortality, or if equipment doesn't fit due to body size.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The CYCLE trial tests if early in-bed cycling combined with routine physiotherapy helps critically ill patients on ventilators recover faster than just routine physiotherapy. Patients are randomly assigned to one of these two groups and their strength and physical function are monitored.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
While specific side effects aren't listed here, potential risks may include muscle soreness or fatigue from the exercise intervention. The study will monitor patients closely for any adverse reactions related to the in-bed cycling.

2Treatment groups
Experimental Treatment
Active Control
Group I: In-Bed Cycle Ergometer + Routine PTExperimental Treatment2 Interventions
Patients will receive 30 minutes of in-bed cycling once per day, 5 days per week, while they remain in the ICU, for up to a maximum of 28 days. They will also receive routine physiotherapy.
Group II: Routine PTActive Control1 Intervention
Patients will receive routine physiotherapy interventions per current institutional practice
